Description

Organic (and gluten-free) buckwheat beer so basically a variation on the Sara beers by the same artisanal Walloon brewery, bottle from Drinks 4 U in Deinze. Intricately 'Brugse kant'-like lacing, off-white, medium thick, slowly opening but largely stable head, initially clear, deep 'old gold' robe, deeper and warmer gold and misty with sediment, lively sparkling. Aroma of old bread crust, fried potato slices, cold pasta, dried apple peel, dried banana, straw, raw turnip, dried camomile, baking soda, wet white paper, brown soap. Restrainedly sweetish taste with sourish edge, some green apple and very light banana, lively carbonation, clean and slick, grainly, 'thinly' white bready maltiness, a tad resinous with clear, deep sourish and somewhat soapy accent of buckwheat (as in Sara). Mild floral hop bitter finish, softly spicy and drying, with a soda- and plaster-like effect which is likely just a continuation of the buckwheat element, a bit flour-like in the very end. Unambitious, pale lager-imitating Belgian blonde, clean and low profile quencher with a specialty grain twist; enjoyable and 'honest' enough on a hot summer day.

Commissioned Silenrieux tripel, thanks to tderoeck. Very thick, cobweb-lacing, foamy, rocky, snow white head, hazy warm golden blonde with khaki tinge. Aroma unfortunately suffering from strong DMS (overcooked cauliflower), next to notes of pear, sweetbread, pineapple, banana peel, turnip juice, raw potato, cloves, grass, coriander seed, white pepper, green olives, young ‘jenever’. Estery onset, apple and banana notes, fizzy carb with minerally effect; supple, rounded mouthfeel, bready malt base with caramelly edges and lingering, honeyish white candi syrup sweetness as well as persisting banana ester, yet not overly so. Light grassy and herbal hop bitterishness in the finish mingled with lingering sweetness and noticeable, insufficiently hidden, gin-like alcohol warming the throat a bit. Classically conceived sweet Belgian tripel, very old school (also in its label), like something that was brewed thirty or more years ago. Too bad for the DMS, otherwise acceptable for what it is.

Bottle. Delices and Caprices, Brussels. Had this a while. Clear, deep ruby red. Thick, dense, creamy, lasting, beige foam. Looks great. Nose has tangy vine fruits. Some balsamic vinegar. Some toffee malts. Taste is a little sour and vinous. Smooth mouthfeel, however. Tangy vine fruits to finish. Yeah. It looks good...
