Description
In 2011 we Howling Hops reopened the Cock tavern on Mare street as Hackney’s first brewpub. The brewery expanded a few times but still couldn’t really keep up with the demand. So in 2015 the brewery moved to the current address in the heart of Hackney Wick.
Howling Hops brew bold, modern, uncompromised, flavoursome, generously hopped beers. All our beers are unfiltered, unpasteurised and suitable for vegans. We still stick to our early philosophy of ‘make some interesting beer’, although not every one is different these days. We have a core of 4 beers that we brew regularly, a couple of beers we brew seasonally and every 3 or 4 weeks we brew a different single batch beer.

Opaque black beer, few tan bubbles for a head. Palate is smooth and a little dry with mild fine carbonation. Smooth dark malt, traces of roast and earth. No cream though. Nice touch of blackberry fruits on the finish that livens the beer. Semi dry finish with subtle bubblegum ester and mild earthy aftertaste. Easy drinking.

Taste follows nose, good chocolate beat to this one, light roast malt, touch of coffee. Medium bodied, smooth on the palate, soft carbonation. A decent hoppy chocolate mash up!

Cock Tavern. Keg. Very cloudy gold beer, residual white head. Not pretty! Palate is crisp and dry. Quite a dominant sweet grain to start, touch of rawness. A little tropical fruits hops but that grain dominates. Semi dry finish. Not right.

Cock Tavern. Keg. Hazy gold beer, tidy white head. Palate is light and crispy, semi dry. Minerals. Bready pale malts with a hint of lager character. Hops are European in style if not origin. Herb and spice but bolder than most European hops. Finishes smooth with the malt turning slightly creamy. Bitter grapefruit in the aftertaste. All right.

Cask at Pigs Ear BF 2012, London. Pours clear amber with a foamy, white head. Big pine hop nose, some dark citrus - quite rich. Medium sweet flavor with continued intense pine character, ripe fruits, grass. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sticky finish, lightly abrasive bitterness, resinous pine, dirt, grass, toasted malts. Very good, though could use a bit of refining.
