Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Draught at Ølbaren, vintage 2004
Hazy light blond color. Interesting spicy aroma, more sour (citrus fruits) than the average Triple; white beans. Powerful body, enough malt roundness, well balanced. Very good.

Chestnut brown with orange reflections, very stable cream-coloured beer. Earthy, leafy and some chocolate. Alcohol & higher alcohols, little point of acidity. After some time, an aroma of fresh herbs. Chocolate flavour, immediately taken over by a very rich malty, alcohol-dominated taste, sweet-sour alike with a complexity, very difficult to obtain, displaying a rich, velvety MF, and of course very full body. Only bad point is, warming up, the appearance of an excessive liquorice flavour. Very nice, and indeed not the same as the Pannepot (without Danish runes). But still excellent...

2006 bottle picked up at the brewery in May 06. Very gushy when I opened it and had to have the glass ready. Beautiful mahogany/ruby clear clour with thin off white head. I’ve had this younger, so I was interested to see what another 6 months in bottle would do. Malty fruit and some bananery esters on aroma. Some brown sugar as well. Some vinous fruit. Some of the distinctive vinous fruits in mouth with some coffee actually. Well carbonated. Finish has some hot alcohol and spicey hop. Fruits become more syrupy and intense as the mouthfeel progresses. The carbonation gives a prickling to the tongue. I prefer the 04 and 05 vintages. Flatter and thinner flavours. Still a good beer, but lacks the former perfection

On tap at Kulminator during LCRBM 2006. Huge thanks to Carlo for this. Also thanks to everyone who drank up the Liefmans Kriek to free up the tap (ooh that was a chore!). Cloudy copper colour with thick beige head. Spice and yeast aroma. Spicey lemon and raisin/sultana in mouth. Dry finish. Gorgeous. Love the tripel type fruit.

Rating # 400 2005 Bottle courtesy of MartinT, thank you very much. Poured into a Chimay glass. Looks beautiful with a strong creamy, off white color that actually sticks to the glass as the middle settles. Color is a dark dark brown with no clarity and just a bit of translucence. Aroma is very present - very nicely sweet bread, strong licorice-y fruitiness, and overall great malt character. Strong, sweet, tasty and yet balanced and not overwhelming. Taste is nice but not as impressive – heavy sweetness and creaminess. Pretty much if bread was turned into a liquid. I really get a strong presence of taste in my mouth but again nothing that overwhelms. Oatmeal, cereal, milk as well. Mouthfeel is nice as well, carbonation is slightly tamed yet present. A malty-fruit aftertaste left. Low bitterness.9/5/8/4/19

Rerate: 2006 bottle on 9/05/07, this batch made it to the States. In general the beer is just too young; the flavors have not got a chance to meld well yet. The head is smaller yet the carbonation feels similar. Still a very good beer. 8/4/8/4/17

Rerate: 2006 bottle on 11/15/10, so 4 years old. I pop the cap and the beer is first still but after a moment begins to foam, slowly, op the neck of this 330mL plain, Euro-style, brown bottle. I pour the beer slowly into a Westvleteren chalice glass. The head is medium sized and it sits atop the dark brown color body. The aroma is very prune-molasses alcoholic Belgian syrup. There is just a hint of cardboard in the back there. The flavor is similar, its that alcoholic syrup Belgian sweetness that is pretty yummy. Its a bit raw at first but when I pour the rest of the beer out, the sooty bottom calms it down and makes it delicious. Black raisin bread, sweet black biscuit cookie, and other similar descriptors all come to mind. Still nowhere as good as that first bottle that I tried. 8/4/8/4/17
