Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Parralel tasting of the Panep(/)ots at the eve before LCRBM. Main differnce lies in that the old original is spicier and has a richer "darK flavor whereas the latter is somewhat fruitier.

Opaque. Very dark brown. Deeply both vinous & chocolate, woody, plummy, deep fruit...just rich. Tart, vinous, chewy toffee flavour with plum and fruitcake, balsamic, blackberry and alcohol. Complex, deep, vibrant, with chocolate notes.

Bottle Hazy, brown body. Creamy, light brown head. Excellent lace. Looks lovely! Lightly malty aroma of caramel, raisins, a little bit of liquor. (Unfortunately) not as heavily malty as the normal Pannepot. Lightly bitter, moderatetely sweet flavour. Ok flavour, but again not as complex as pannepot. The flavour lacks the strong malts as well. So overall I think I can say the Pannepøt is way softer than the Pannepot, but still has some of it’s complexity, but more subtle (both in aroma and in flavour). Give me the Pannepot!

I don’t know what’s the difference with the other brew, but skortila managed to obtain a big bottle of this (probably just thinking it to be the regular pannepot). But taste was the same to my opinion: sweet, dried fruits, malts. Delicious again.

Bottle at Brugs Beertje, Bruges, Belgium
Deep, black body. Fizzy off-white head. Aroma of wood, cherry, port, ’flemish sour’, ... Quite flat beer. Modrately sour, lightly sweet. Nice fruitiness. A very good flemish sour. I’d suggest to work on the carbonation to get a better flemish sour. But apparently the Struise gus wanted it to be somewhat flat. I can live with that. :)

(Bottle 75 cl) Slightly hazy orangey brown with a dense, creamy and quite lasting, beige head. Soft, sherry like aroma. Full body with sweet caramel and some fruit. A quite warming alcohol. Nice all right but I had expected a much more subtle complexity. Probably will improve with aging. 241206

2006 bottle from santa - nearly black, stout-like pour, with a creamy tan head - the aroma is spicy up front, with notes of raisins and plums, and a slight vinous/red wine character - quite sweet and port-like, with some aromatic, floral flavors (lavender and rose mostly) - some brandy-like qualities - sweet but never cloying - warming alcohol that never becomes boozy - a really nice after dinner beverage.
