Description
Harvey's is the oldest independent Brewery in Sussex. Founded by John Harvey in 1790 it still remains a privately owned family business, with the eighth generation currently working there. We pride ourselves on the craft of our brewing, environmental credentials, local distribution, local charitable activities and loyal staff. Widely known for our Best Bitter, our beers and pubs can be found in and around the South East. As a Regional Brewer we tend not distribute further than 60 miles from the brewery premises, however our beers can be purchased via our online shop shop.harveys.org.uk and at our Brewery Shop in Lewes. Mine had no year or bottle # A.C.D. on the cap. 9.7 oz bottle. A straight into the glass pour produced a small diminishing head on this deep brown, ruby highlighted beer. Strong sweet aroma that carries some notes of chocolate covered cherries, caramel and a hint of smoke. The flavor picks right up with the chocolate covered cherries and has a lemony finish to it. Some licorice in there too. Very thick and syrupy body make this a definite sipper.

Bottle. Very black colour, NO head. Aroma totally like sherry. Sweet... liquorice... bitter... salty... Very good effort. I thought I’d never say this, but there may be too much flavour in this beer.

An amber beer with no head. The aroma is sweet caramelic and quite hoppy. The flavor is slightly sour (probably because of the low ABV) with notes of caramel leading up to a dry end.

Bottled, 275ml bottle, alc. 8.1%
Drinking Christmas ale in August was ... interesting. Dark nut brown. Brown head with big bubbles. Clove, prunes - a kind of pudding aroma. Low carbonation. Spicey with bitter aftertaste: hints of clove and cinnamon. Some alcoholic kick in the middle reveals high ABV. Similar to George Cale Christmas Ale but not so yeasty. (6/4/4/2/10 2.6).
Re-rate in 2006, bottle, most likely 2002 vintage. Dark muddy brown, small tan head. Toffeish, light oxidation in the aroma. Wineous, full bodied, toffeish flavor. (7/4/8/4/16 3.9)
Re-rated in 2007, same batch than previous ones
Sherry-like outstandingly drinkable liquerish palate. Raisins. prunes and dark bread. (8/4/8/4/16 4.0)

[Cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen] A dark orange beer with a small head. It has next to no aroma, but the aroma that is there is very sour - almost like stomach acid. The flavor cask flat with notes of lemon, peach, and with the special wheat sourness before a dry hoppy end sets in. This tastes like a wheat beer mixed with a bitter - is that a new class of beer? on my palate the mixing of styles doesn’t come out well.

Sampled at the GA 14% gathering. Thanks to TheBeerCellar2 for bringing it! This poured a very small head that quickly disappeared. Molasses in the aroma. Flavor of soy sauce and raisins with a dry, chalky, sticky, palate. Heavy and overpowering.

Cask. Slightly sweet. Quite distinct liquorice flavour. Also a hint of nuttiness which I dont find suits this style very well. On the other hand it doesnt bother me too much.
