Description
The Bullfinch Brewery was first set up in the kitchen of former travelling sound engineer, beer enthusiast and home brewer Ryan Mclean.
Ryan's travels have ignited a passion and love for great beer. His continuing commitment to the quality of beer and his enthusiasm have created Bullfinch Brewery and its contemporary take on craft beer here in the UK.
Ryan has been brewing professionally since 2014 and is making progressive beers that blend experimental ideas with traditional brewing methods and techniques.
Hidden away under a railway arch in South East London Ryan can be found brewing his modern ideas on a much loved and used, historic 5 Barrel kit originally built by Charles Wells.

Keg at BD CJ. It pours clear pale gold with a small white head. The nose is earthy, grassy, floral, sweet lemon, lemon verbena, straw and hay. The taste is crisp, pretty bitter, lemon peel, grapefruit rind, peppery spice, straw, barnyard, grassy vibe, straw and mild astringency with a drying finish. Light body and fine carbonation. Lacks a bit of finesse. There is a grassy farmyard character coming through which doesn’t suit this style.

Keg at BD CJ. It pours hazy amber with an orange hue a decent white head. The nose is pissy, musty, grassy dank vibe, hop sack, light sweetness, peach and earth. The taste is pretty bitter upfront, earth, toasted grass, dankness, light resin, toasted pine, waxy citrus rind, light alcohol and some astringency with a lingering dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. A bit raw and dank. I imagine the aroma is love - hate. It’s far too pissy for me. OK .

Keg at BD CJ. It pours jet black with a small tan head. The nose is rich, bitter - sweet, sort of meaty, Worcestershire sauce crisps, earth and light spice. The taste is assertively bitter upfront, charred wood, hard roast, some acidity, unanimous, burnt plastic, chewy malt, smoke, cocoa, spice and salted liquorice with a dry, yet chewy finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Oily mouth - feel. On my first few sips I enjoyed this....but it comes across as quite messy and burnt. I?m not sold on it.

Keg at BD CJ. It pours hazed amber with a small white head. The nose is bitter - sweet, fragrant, stewed orange, kumquat, bergamot, earth and spice. The taste is crisp, bitter, toasted grass, grainy vibe, bitter orange rind, peppery spice and some soap with a dry finish. Light - medium body and fine carbonation. A bit too weak and spicy for my liking. Ok, but I had hoped for more.

Keg at BD CJ. It pours hazy golden with a small white head. The nose is fresh, juicy, sweet orange, peach, quite spicy, ginger root, pepper, earth, bubblegum and brioche. The taste is crisp, bitter, crackery malt, cereal, orange peel, lemon rind, earth, straw and spice with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Rather drinkable. A decent saison by any measure. Aroma stands out.

Tap(RBESG2014): Deep golden, stable and creamy off-white head; moderate dry hoppy and yeasty (turpentine = necrotic yeast) nose; moderate dry bitter flavour, quite light bodied; lingering dry fruity-hoppy finish. Well crafted, well balanced…

Tap(RBESG2014): Nearly black with a ruby sheen; bitter chocolate and dried berries in the nose, hops barely detectable; moderate to solid bitter flavour, medium bodied; lingering bitter-chocolatey finish, some dried fruits detectable, but no aromatic hops. More a Stout than a Black IPA IMHO…

Cask at the Bullfinch brewery taproom. Pours mostly clear golden-brown with minimal head. The nose has lots of oily hops, pine, ripe orange, bread, some ripe apples. Heavy sweet flavor, lightly syrupy, with toasted grains, stewed apples, leaves, earth, ripe orange, melon, mango. Full bodied, chewy, with soft carbonation. Hot and resinous on the finish, with bitter grass and pine, syrupy sugars, toasted bread and grains, overripe citrus fruits. Well, unsurprisingly this is heavy-duty gear. Given its heft it has some drinkability, but the beer is mostly novelty and I would struggle with more than 1/3 of a pint - which is what I have in front of me.
