Belgo Sapiens was officially born on August 27, 2015, the date the first brew was released. 15 years after his training, 15 years after traveling around the world, 15 years after the development of the brewpubs between France and Canada, Damien Demunter opened Belgo Sapiens in his homeland, a brewery with a strong brewing heritage and proud of its terroir.

Fles gedronken @ hotel in Mons/Bergen. Donkergeel bier met mooie schuimkraag. Smaak is licht bitter hoppig en licht zoet met iets van honing en citrus. Redelijk goed bier wat mij betreft maar niet echt bijzonder.

hazy pale yellow colour, huge, though not really stable white head; aroma of wet grains, coriander, orange peel oils, lemony notes and slight banana (maybe some apricot and pineapple, too); taste has the same notes with lemony/orange zest dominance and definite (tropical)fruity hoppy bitterness; really good witbier

The tripel under this brand, from a 33 cl bottle at Kantien in Ghent; seemingly atypically old-fashioned for Belgo Sapiens, but still with a slight ‘twist’ in the form of dry-hopping, like its dubbel brother. Thick and regular, moussy, snow white, lacing head over an initially clear, warm peach-tinged ‘old gold’ coloured beer with lively fizz, turning misty with sediment. Aroma of banana peel, tulips, margarine, acacia honey, lemon candy, white bread, custard, pineapple, ripe pear. Fruity onset, subdued sweetness of pineapple, pear, banana and fried apples, stinging carbonation with minerally effects, smooth and somewhat resinous mouthfeel. White bread-like, tad soapy body with rounded character, leading to a long, spicy, rooty, bit grapefruit peel-coloured hop bitter finish mixed with light spicy phenolic notes and some warming, gin-like alcohol. Elegant, clean tripel, more hop bitter than average in a pleasant and technically well-executed way, among the better of the countless Belgian tripels I had so far.

Dubbel from a 33 cl bottle (perhaps atypical for Belgo Sapiens, the first Belgian brewer to use ‘craft beer cans’), referring to a 17th-century local legend. Tasted at Kantien in Ghent. Creamy, papery lacing, regularly shaped, pale yellowish beige and stable head, hazy ruddy-bronze robe with ‘dirty vermillion’ hue. Aroma of hard caramel candy, fig, dried orange peel, warm toast, diluted coffee grounds, old cookies, red apple, straw. Estery onset but not overly so, dried banana, fig and slight blackberry notes, sweetish without being cloying anywhere; fizzy and bit minerally carb, full and rounded body. Caramelly maltiness with a very subtle metallic edge to it, relatively low in sweetness for the style, even working towards a finish bittered by toasted malt, even a very slight dash of coffee grounds roastedness as well as a firm dosis of spicy, leafy hop bitterness, accentuated by the dry-hopping. Not the first dry-hopped dubbel in this country but in any case a pleasant one to drink, a relief from the usually very sweet and simplistic industrial dubbels most people resort to – so within context of its intended old school style, certainly among the better ones I had so far.
