Description
Based in the heart of Stockport for almost two centuries, and owning around 260 tenanted and managed pubs, inns and hotels across the North West, ‘Robinsons’ is one of oldest and most respected names in British brewing history.
Robinsons took over Hartleys brewery in 1982, closing down the Ulverston plant in 1994 and transferring the Hartley brands to the Unicorn brewery. Robinsons bought the rights to the Ward brands in 2006 but subsequently sold some of those brands to Maxim Beer Co.

Cask at Bakers Vaults, Stockport. Pours golden amber with a small off-white head. Just some hops in the aroma – but they are fairly powerful ones. In the mouth it is juicy with a slight bitterness. Hops are the mainstay again in the mouth, plus oranges, citrus and some hints of malts. Later on some traces of ginger as well leading to a juicy and slightly dry finish. This is decent – though I would say it is more of a bitter than a pale ale.

Stockport Beer Festival 2014. Clear golden in colour. Easy hoppy effort, with the hop providing a mild grittiness to proceedings.

Keg at the Royal Oak, Lindale, Cumbria. Black with a thick cream-coloured nitro head. Smooth creamy coffee and milk chocolate up front; a hint of blackberry and a wisp of smoke emerge in the finish. This is rather good; well done, Robinson's, I didn't know you had it in you!

Bottle from local Home Bargains store (at 4.2%) – drank at home. Pours golden amber with minimal head. The aroma is a mix of flowery hops, lemongrass and molasses. In the mouth hoppy bitterness is the first thing to attract attention, but there is some underlying sweetness from the start and this becomes dominant. Flavour of honey, butter, unripe apples and orange peel plus hints of darker fruits. Sweetness lasts into the slightly dry finish. A bit strange this one.

500ml bottle bought at K-Market Kilpishalli. Shared with Finn. Clear late straw coloured body, crocheted lacing, and a remaining pearl white head. Dusty hops on the nose, promising. Ripe citrus flavours, inclulding lemony hops. Moderate bitter fruity ending. Clean on the swallow. Moreish. (Tromsø, 13.05.2024).
