Description
The brewery Slaghmuylder was founded in 1860 by Emmanuel Slaghmuylder. Around the turn of the century his son Ernest took over the company. He married Marie Van Roy, daughter of a brewer family of Wieze. His three sons opened a new brewery in 1926 which could start immediately with the new brewing process for lager beer. During the war of 1940-1945 brewing restarted for high-fermentation ales. It is only in1958 that the brewery started again with the production of low-fermentation beers. In the mid sixties the three brothers were succeeded by their sons. From 1979 on, the three nephews started brewing the Witkap Pater beers on request of brewery "De Drie Linden" from Brasschaat. In 1981 the Witkap Pater brand was officially taken over by Slaghmuylder. Beginning of theeighties the brewery was equipped with separate fermentation and layering cellars for both high and low fermentation beers. Brewery Slaghmuylder remains a unique family company that builds on a rich tradition.

Huge, very thick head, yellowishhly tinted, slowly collapsing; very dark brown with deep ruby shine. Nose with brown candi sugar, rich coloured malts, spicey finish. Sweet, with roasted malts, just a touch of light-roasted bread or biscuits. Some liqueurish notes. Spicey, but no identifying. Well-bodied, chewy mouthfeel. Aftertaste has a suspicion of sourness, as well as bitter almonds flavour. Nice dubbel. This one was very fresh, but I know from experience this beer has quite some ageing potential.

An orange beer with a fine white head. The aroma is of corriander, oranges, and yeast. The flavor is slightly acidic with notes of oranges and corriander. The alcohol is slightly felt as it runs across the tongue. It ends on a dry corriander note. All in all an OK beer.

Very dark brown with ruby-foxy shine; yellow-brown head, dissipating. Extremely fruity nose, combined with almost-American hops. GREAT! Taste is again fruity-estery-yeasty, but this time more banana or very sweet melon-like, and creamy. Outspoken sweet, hops gone as bitterness, but a certain aroma lingers. Retronasal some lemongrass. Creamy mouthfeel, bordering on the edge of capuccino-coffee. Finish is a bit empty, however. Surprisingly fruity beer. This time. It seems to change character every other year. Used to be the only Vienna-type beer in Belgium - less than 15 years ago. If this is still bottom-fermenting, I'm Manneke Pis.

Hazy grey colour with a very large dense white head. An odd colour for the beer, but it still looked pretty nice! Smells of witbier: corn, wheat and coriander seed are all evident. Light-bodied; tastes of corn, citrus, wheat and a bit of hops. Palate filled with spices (cloves), yeast and hay. A pretty good white, definately one to try. Overall a better than average beer...I find it a bit wierd to be under the Belgian Ale category, but whatever it is...it's pretty good! I got my 11.2 ounce bottle from Lee & Edwards in Roanoke, Virginia purchased by good friend and fellow ratebeerian JonR888710.

Love that aroma! Lemony and biting, could it be...Lysol? Think happy thoughts. Cloudy yellow body rich in yeast sediment. Flavor is citrus, with a crisp, sour, lemon feel and biting carbonation and acid at the back of the tongue. A medley of sharp, lively citrus awaits the lucky suitor of this quality Belgian.

Golden with cold haze. Very thick white head, reasonably stable. Slightly alcoholic nose, sweet malts, maize (?), winey (? is this suggestion?), whiff of coriander. There IS white wine in the taste! Beer is sweet in a liqueurish way, medium-dry. Slight peachy, sourish taste, nothing to do with carbonation. Sourish-prickly sensation, no alcohol-burn. Soft basis. No new aftertaste, finish a bit empty (maize...). Witkap tipel has a break between the nose and the taste/finish. It gets mellow and lighter after the beginning. The question marks hail from the legends surrounding this beer. There is maize flake in the mash. As legend would have it, the brewery would add 9% white wine to the tanks. But it is legend...

(I can understand that this is exported under the name 'single'. But the age-old original name, dating already from the Verlinden brewery at Brasschaat is STIMULO) Pale yellow. Thick white head, collapsing. Fresh, herbal, grassy nose, a bit hoppy. I cannot smell the maize (joke). Sharper, spicey taste. Hint of mustard seed? Fruity taste likesome exotic fruit: papaya, cactus-fig,... Rather well-bodied for such a light beer. Beautiful traditional ale.Was one of the first, and last, beers calling itself "Trappist", before this became reserved for the Trappist monasteries. I still think it has Trappist-quality.

Bottled. Cloudy golden colour. Acidic fruity aroma. Freshly malty, more so than Witkap Pater Stimulo, but otherwise near identical.
