Description
The brewery Slaghmuylder was founded in 1860 by Emmanuel Slaghmuylder. Around the turn of the century his son Ernest took over the company. He married Marie Van Roy, daughter of a brewer family of Wieze. His three sons opened a new brewery in 1926 which could start immediately with the new brewing process for lager beer. During the war of 1940-1945 brewing restarted for high-fermentation ales. It is only in1958 that the brewery started again with the production of low-fermentation beers. In the mid sixties the three brothers were succeeded by their sons. From 1979 on, the three nephews started brewing the Witkap Pater beers on request of brewery "De Drie Linden" from Brasschaat. In 1981 the Witkap Pater brand was officially taken over by Slaghmuylder. Beginning of theeighties the brewery was equipped with separate fermentation and layering cellars for both high and low fermentation beers. Brewery Slaghmuylder remains a unique family company that builds on a rich tradition.

Bottle
Earthy, berrylike and bready aroma. Grey cloudy amber, ow tanned head. One-dimensional flavor - light fruity yeastyness, yeasty aftertaste, some ryebread edges. Lightish body, could be more chewy, plentifull carbonation.

Bottled. Hazy yellow colour, white creamy longlasting head. Sweet citrus and wheat in flavour and aroma. Also hints of alcohol in flavour. Too sweet for me. Also kind of "La Swaf!"ish aftertaste. Dishwater.

Bottle. Nice aroma, yeasty, sweet and fruity. Clear golden colour. The head is white and semi-stable. Looks fine and creamy. Flavour is also quite yeasty. The bitterness is uncompromising, but without getting too harsh for me. The flavour is very clean compared to other tripels, which suits me fine. Carbonation is below average and gives the beer a creamy feel. In my opinion, this is one of the better examples of a tripel.

1998 vintage at Kulminator, May 2005. Dark brown ale with burgundy hue and a light moka head. Light caramelized sugar in mouth, with milk chocoalte notes. Lightly sour notes. Beer as maderized nicely, bringing out woody notes in this sour brown ale.

Undated bottle from Julio’s, consumed on 6/27/2005. From the condition of the label and cap, and the time I’ve seen this on the shelf, and more importantly, the flavor, I’d pin this at somewhere around 2 years of age, perhaps a bit less.
The carbonation has begun to recede, and the head, while lasting and lacing, is not as full and fluffy as it must have been when fresh; which is understandable. Anyways, it still has respectable retention, and the bottom of the bottle is just completely covered with dark sediment. Fine bubbles rise from the bottom of the glass when poured, with bits of sediment floaties. The beer is very hazy, obviously, and an amber-copper color, with straw-yellow colors on the edges. The head is white. Aroma smells of fluffy white bread with warm honey on it, quite doughy and yeasty. Light spice notes of pepper and with some definite fruit esters. Full and malty, the aroma promises good things. Flavor does begin with a good malt base, sweet bread and dough, light bits of yellow fruits (lemons and oranges), some red apples and then a good amount of bitterness, dry and not terribly flavorful for hops. I get a little bit of powdery sugar, unfortunately, which I can’t stand, adding a slightly artificial sweetness and powdery texture. Slightly fizzy mouthfeel, but after breathing, these issues are not as pronounced. Honey and graham crackers, dry grains, dry peppery hops bitterness. Finishes lightly sweet, with chewy yeast and moderate bitterness. Some metallic notes from the old yeast sitting at the bottom. I don’t find near as much tartness as everyone else.
