Belgian style strong dark ale (Sleeping Dog apparently, never had that in its regular form) by Ostend’s ‘city brewery’, aged on ‘jenever’ barrels; bottle from Latems Drankhuys. Thinnish, pale greyish beige, open head leaving flat ‘islands’ in the middle and a more or less steady rim around the edge; misty chestnut brown robe with mahogany glow. Aroma of ripe banana, caramel candy, indeed strong ‘oude jenever’ clashing with the rest, latex, clove, varnish, old brown bread, juniper berries, dead tree branches, old coffee grounds, wet oak wood, old moldy hazelnuts. Sweetish onset, figs, dates, elderberries, clear brown sugariness; medium carb, slender brown-bready maltiness with caramelly core and a rather strong metallic ‘zing’ at the edges. Brown sugariness remains till the end, cloying a bit even, while a herbal, earthy hop bitter note develops and connects with the jenever effect, which adds tannic oakiness and – more so – astringent raw alcohol and crude solventy effects (plastic even) that ruin an already poorly structured beer. Unbalanced, weird and very solventy, this is about the level of quality I am used to from this brewery, I’m afraid…

Medium if dense off-white head over copperish amber beer, veiled. Parsley, caramel, sugar syrup, ureum. Sourish flavour with caramel, leafy. Bit of lemon icetea and oxydation in the finish, old honey. Bit slick, serious carbonation. Smells sweet, tastes sourish. I suggest Kneusje instead of Teusje, serves Oxfam and the brewing effort both, IMHO. Thanks to Stef!

Explosive foaming to several big glasses of off-white foam; slowly retreating to pale golden beer. Lightly spicy nose, pale malts, peppery. Light sourish flavour, light apple flavour, no doubt infected. Light, light acidthinning, Infected, but in the forgiving way. I cannot believe for a moment this really sports 10.8% ABV. Thanks to Stef!

Sampled under the name Experimental N° 5 Amour Fou Huge, dense & stable cream head over deep red-brown beer, lacey. Hot malts, brown malts with melanoidins and (rancid) arachide - fatty acids! Wood, brown malts and melanoidins, some chocolate, but again fatty acids. In the aftertaste something sourish comes up. Together with the fatty acids, that spells doom. Pretty slick, good carbonation. Something went awry here. Thanks to Stef!

Fast gone light-yellowish head over faintly veiled ochre-golden beer. Fruity nose, oranges, but also liqueurish, Grand Marnier with most of the sugar gone. Later the aroma becomes cheesy, as in old running cheese. Much more citrus in the taste, fresh herbs and other grains; nice light acidic flavour. Light MF, feels a lot better carbonated than it looks. Bit slick, almost no aftertaste. Gets better whilst drinking. Thanks to Stef!

Worst gusher I ever experienced. Just spent 15 minutes cleaning up. The beer is shit. Cola. Caramel. Fizzy shit. I won't ever but from this brewery again.

1 February 2020. At Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke, Kevin, Niels & Cynthia! Hazy dark brown, very thin, frothy, tan head. Aroma of green apple, toffee, raisin, liqueur-filled cake, wood. Taste has sweet-sour green apple, raisin & plum, caramelly & cake-like maltiness with a nutty-woody edge. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, phenolic with ripe fruit & warming calvados-like alcohol. 'Young' profile of green apple lingers. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Too young, too plain.

Fles geprobeerd met Roelzie1986 en KoenvD. Het is een donkerbruin bier met een dun beige schuimkraag. Smaak en geur zurig, lichte hout tonen. Had er meer van verwacht.
