Description
The history of the brewery dates back to 1679. At the end of the eighteenth century, Jacobus Liefmans settled in Oudenaarde and gave the brewery its name. It was around 1900 that Liefmans started filling maturation tanks with black cherries, on a small scale. Local farmers brought their excess crops of black cherries to Liefmans and swapped them for beer. One individual who played a key part in this was Rosa Merckx. She was closely involved in the brewery’s operations over several decades. Thanks to her encouragement, the cherry beer evolved into a real success story.

Hazy burgundy/red coloured body with a light tan head. Sweet/tart cherry aroma with little else. Sweet cherry taste ending in a pleasant tartness. Overall, a good beer, but not spectacular. I sampled this beer on draught at L'Enfant in Washington, D.C. on 05-March-2004.

This is a fantastic beer that only budgetary concerns keep from being a regular drinker for me. The first beer I ever rated and still my favorite in this style. Definitely a world classic +++ Sampled from a 12 oz green bottle this beer pours a dark brown color with a small tan head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was sour and tart oak and bread. The flavor is dryish, tart and sour with notes of vague dark fruits, molasses and bread. Long tart and sour finish. Fairly full bodied. No longer the most sour beer I have personally tried, but still one of my favorites of the sour beers. Too sour for many of my friends though. A world classic none the less.

An amber beer with no head. The aroma is sour - wildfermentation? with hints of oranges and metal. The flavor is malty, slightly sour, and acidic with notes of apricot and hops. The end is dry. An OK beer without being good.

Hazy brown colour with predominant ruby highlights and no head. Aroma of metal, blood, malt and sour fruit. Medium to Light-bodied; Sweet flavour initially of pears, peaches and granny smith apples fading to an inherent sourness. Aftertaste clean and a bit sour. Overall, a less flavourul flemish sour, but not too bad. Worth trying if you enjoy the style! I bought this 25 cL bottle at Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia and sampled it on 22-November-2003.

Dark red color, brownish head. Aroma of sweet cherry, artificial indeed. Sirupy taste of cherry, sweet. I like the ’Old’ Krieks much better.

Redbrown color, short head. Aroma is of oak wood, dusty, only slightly fruity. Taste is more typical flemish sour ale, tart cherries. But this one is not as fruity as some others, but has a more woody note.

Pourred a nice deep brown brew with a dark head that stayed on for a while. Very acidic and sour taste with a hint of sugar. This is OK but not my favorite of the Liefmans. Still I noticed that this one has more head then the other Liefmans and lots of sediment at the bottom...

Preposterously huge, cyclamen head; very irregular big/tiny bubbles, very lacey; brown-red beer. Disgustingly, nauseatic sweets - cherry drops nose; cherry essence. Overwhelmingly sweet, cherry-drop flavour, but background of wood and even a bit Maillard, reminiscence of the breweries' name & fame. There is a certain tartness, evern glimpse of sour, bit it is Zulte-like (injection of lactic acid). Well-bodied for such a light beer. So, Liefmans/RIVA have jumped on the bandwagon of Fruitella beers. Bwaah. And this isn't even the worst.

Bottled, 1987 vintage. Cloudy nut brown. Acidic nos with lactic acid and coffee, and also hints of blood and metal. Vinous with clean maltiness. Very complex. Citric finish with dash of bitterness.

I drank this one cold. Even then, quite ok. Good aroma of cherries, bit tart. Sweet cherrie taste. Sweet sticky palate. Additional tasting, warm/hot, from tap in Cafe Samson, Nijmegen: Hazy red color, short head. Aroma of medicine, horseblanket (but the real thing), some cherry, disgusting aroma. Sour taste, medicine, bit sweet cherry. Next time i want my Gluhkriek cold, because hot it's just disgusting. I expected it to be excellent after i'd read all those comments, but it's just not my thing. Rating when hot: 1.2.
