Bottle from Legacy Liquors, Vancouver
The color is almost black, with medium sized head. Mild aroma of dark caramel, roasted malt, light chocolate, bread. Full bodied; caramelly, moderately sweet, very boozy, bread, raisins, light liquorice; too strong alcohol perception. Pungent final (strong bitterness and alcohol).
Chaotic booze.

22 ounce bottle into chalice, early 2013 bottling. Pours crystal clear deep ruby red color with a small fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, plum, fig, date, caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, light chocolate, clove, herbal, candi sugar, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of yeast ester, fruit, and dark/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, date, caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, light chocolate, clove, herbal, candi sugar, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, fig, date, caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, light chocolate, clove, herbal, candi sugar, light nuttiness and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and complexity of yeast ester, fruit, and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, lightly slick, and fairly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice hybrid dubbel style. All around good balance, complexity, and robustness of yeast ester, fruit, and dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bomber from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours really dark copper. Brown without strong light. Tan head. Mixed bourbon/vanilla and rye spice for aroma. Tickles. Dark fruit. Treacle. Med + body. Flavor is mixed - dark fruit, apparently alcohol, rye spice, bourbon, pretty roasty malt. It’s just a little bit wood tart. Quite a complicated taste thrill. Finishes a mite treacle, but with all the other flavors, why care.

Dark brown coloured body with a very nice three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of strong spices, nutmeg, anise, cardamom, canella and tons of roasted malts, alcohol and a touch of dry oak. Medium-bodied; Very assertive spice flavours dominate the taste with canella and cardamom coming out the strongest, but finishing a little bit spicey. Aftertaste has much more roasted malt, touches of alcohol and quite a bit of bitterness at the finish that doesn’t go great. Overall, a decent beer - made with quality and is full of flavour, but the spices are a bit too much and the depth is not effective enough. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 24-October-2013 for US$7.99 sampled at home in Washington on 20-April-2014 a few minutes after returning from a land with no spices in beer (Germany).

This is awesome. I’m a big fan. Cloudy brown pour with good head and lacing. Lots of roast and citrus malt. Mocha cream head. Bitter finish. Sweetness and bitterness comes together. Some caramelized malt and chocolate as well. Tap at DC Beer festival.

On tap at the hollywood gardens. Big & black. Citrusy smell laced with pepsin. Nice lacing. Bitter hoppy rude first impressions. Leaves a big long burnt roasted IPA finish. A little off and I’m not impressed by this style.
