Bottle courtesy of Jdoolin: Poured a copper color ale with a medium size white foamy head with limited retention and some light lacing. Aroma of sweet sugary malt is dominating with some subtle hints of spices. Taste is mostly dominated by some very sweet malt and some light spices. No hops were discernable and no yeast characteristics that I usually like to find in BSA. Body was slightly light for the style and alcohol was not discernable. I thought this was way too filtered and lacking in spices or yeast characteristics to be truly enjoyable. Re-rate 2011: I obtained this in a trade and forgot I had it before. 2007 bottle drank in 2011. More balanced sweetness and nice fruity ester with great notes such as apricot. This is going from a 2.8 to a 3.7.

Pour is a copper with a small white head. Aroma is some brown sugar with some molasses and alcohol in there. Flavor is lots of candi sugar with touches of strong caramel malts and some dark fruits. I guess this is a Gulden Draak clone. If they were going for that i guess this is spot on except the alcohol does not get in the way like Draak does.

I’m still convinced that these aren’t bottle conditioned, but despite that fact, they pour with a mountainous amount of beautiful, rather dense, grayish-tan head. Deeply-polished mahogany body has lighter hues of amber and caramel and a medium to medium-high clarity. Head shows very strong retention and moderate lacing.
Highly polished roast is very well-integrated with medium-sweet caramel and a strong undercurrent of creamy-sweet pale malts. Hops are moderately citric, very floral and quite heady, never becoming brash or overly aggressive. But they balance the sweet malts perfectly and their relative strength in the nose helps accentuate the other aspects of the aroma. A bit of dry, grassiness and leafiness, with crunchy, almost bready-like crystal maltiness gives an overall picture of earthiness and dry toffee, giving the beer an almost English feel. A very distinct chocolate-buttercream note sits on the finish, with milk chocolate and malted milk characteristics, further adding complexity. Sometimes black and tans just seem a battle of hop vs. medium/dark malt, with no one winning in the end, but not here. This is an aromatic delight and not overdone in the least. No alcohol or flaws apparent.
A slippery, almost chalky-like texture shows a moderate amount of fairly tight carbonation (especially for being force carbed) that accentuates the hard, almost brittle, chocolate-laced toffee and caramel notes. But vanilla-cream-like softness from the pale malts sweeps in and tickles the palate as fruity hops burst on the finish. Nectarines, peaches, golden raisins, oranges and lemons, they never get overly bitter or acidic and don’t dominate the flavor. Quite fresh and with a strong sense of leafy-grassy-earthy flavors as well, which help match the darker malts. Chewy-sweet buttercream and chocolate-covered caramel assert themselves on the finish, with a bit of ashy, old roast. That was the only part I didnt care for (the very dry, almost stale, roastiness). Other than that, it’s a remarkably drinkable, flawless beer that shows no signs of alcohol. Pretty highly filtered, I believe, but this bottle is 3 or 4 months old and shows no negative traits from the filtration. It gives it a more clean feel and a harder, more dry texture, but it works well with their beers, and their VERY ample maltiness seems to more than make up for it.

Pretty dark and viscous pour, maybe not as dark as Yeti but pretty dark. Basically a dark brown color during the pour, giving up a very dark brown, but short lived head, minimal lacing. Big big aroma, nearly all of it "chocolate mocha milk", and then a touch of burnt malt. The flavor is big, not so sweet, but with a dark raisiny fruitiness swimming amidst a dense burnt chocolate, alot of char, even burnt oak, and heavy black malts. A fair bit astringent and heavily acrid/bitter, coating the whole of the palate with the bitterness of black malt. Only a tingle of alcohol presence in the long bitter finish.

Quite dark in the glass, essentially opaque, perhaps a dark red color...tan head. Aroma seems to be a fight between an aggressive citric hoppiness and a slighly weaker roasty malt (there’s also a coffee/chocolate component in there too). Woo - smooth. A soft pleasing dark chocolate sweetness comes to the fore straight off, then a lingering espresso note, just a tingle of hops (indistinct amongst all that malt). Moderately bitter hoppy finish, a touch grassy. Long finish blends bitterness with roast. Nice, and a true blend of styles. Creamy full mouthfeel.

Appealing appearance, a nice bright red color with a large protein head, faded kinda quickly but stopped with a small ring and heavy lacing. Big hoppy nose, grapefruit, sweat, tangerine, pine. Flavor is more balanced, with a bready sweet almost fruity (persimmon) malt, with a mild tingle of citric and floral (rose, lavender?) hops. Finish has a clean bitterness that lingers nicely and seems to touch everything. Palate just a touch on the light side.

Shared by Notalush. Pours motor oil black, very small head but a thick, sticky brown lacing. Aroma is strong but with that hated bean/cold coffee aroma that I hate. Behind that there is a chocolate and and plenty of roastiness. Good amount of sugar sweetness. Mouthfeel is oily and slightly undercarnbonated. Lots of coffee bitternesss. A medium-heavy body. Still, that bean is bad.

Bottle shared by Notalush. Pours dark dark brown. Aroma is nicely hopped, I mean pretty much IPA, very citrus-y. Light sweet caramel behind that. Taste is on the light side, think dry stout (lightly roasted). Still the taste seems a bit empty compared to the aroma. Finishes with a light bitterness. A nice blend of beers.
