Bottle courtesy of Deanso. Poured a hazy straw colour with a frothy white head and lots of bubbles. The aroma is yeast, citrus hop. The flavour is moderate bitter, light sweet with a big dry yeast, hop bitter, light alcohol palate. Medium bodied with lively carbonation.

6th Feb 2015: 33cl bottle in the lovely ’Yesterdays World Beers’ a bar inside an antique shop in Brugge. One of 65 different bottles to choose from (this being one of the two unrated by me). Mini-haze to the golden amber pour, white head on top. Fairly sweet for a ’bitter’ with mild hop nose soon taken over by the malt content, same in the taste. Easy to drink and pleasant, a nice blend in fact: crisp and sharp with the hop element, smooth and calmer with the maltiness. Better than decent.

Classic Christmas ale with deep burgundy colour and thinnish, off-white head. Rich malty and estery aroma, yeasty, fruity with spicy notes, caramelly, chocolate accents, dried orange peel, brown rhum. Malty taste with full and creamy mouthfeel, sweet, candied cherries, port wine, cocoa hints, caramelly, smooth with retronasal spiciness, a toasted hint in the finish, some herbal hops and warming alcohol. Very enjoyable winter warmer, one of the best products of this brewery in my opinion, with good ageing potential too.

Classic dubbel, launched in the fifties for a festivity in the village of Sint-Lievens-Esse which is held only once every 50 years. Tasted often from bottle and tap, this is a hazy bronze coloured ale with light beige, medium thick head and a soft, creamy, almost buttery texture, malt sweet, very caramelly with a light sourishness, bready and a tad chocolatey, dried fruits, somewhat metallic, nutty, yeasty, soft herbal hoppiness in the finish without ’true’ bitterness. Your average, ordinary dubbel I suppose, nothing exceptional, just simple old school decency.

16/01/2015 @home 33cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck. Dark brown with small beige head. Aroma : Sweet, caramel, dark fruits, roasted malts. Taste : sweetness, caramel, roasted malts, fruits and a bit bitterness in the end. All very mild & gentle

Somewhat of a classic, since 1994. Peach blonde, hazy, with thick and frothy cream white head; restrained fruitiness, hints of apple and apricot, honeyish malt sweet touch, yeasty, medium carbo, herbal hop bitterish finish with a hint of warming alcohol. Perfectly acceptable, albeit stereotypical Belgian tripel.

Classic sweet stout with a long history, named after Buffalo Bill when he came to town in Sint-Lievens-Esse more than a century ago. Nowadays effectively labelled ’stout’ but till recently, this was a kind of Flemish sweet stout, an old-fashioned style nobody drinks anymore, in disguise. Bronze beer with medium, light beige head; caramelly maltiness, candi syrup sweetness, some fruity esters, biscuit, light and thin body, smooth, lightly bitterish finish; a bit straightforward but this is perfectly acceptable for this particular style; simple, but tasty and ’honest’. A flashback into Belgian brewing history, like many old regional beers from old family brewers that are still kept alive.
