Description
Four Winds joined the burgeoning BC craft beer scene and opened their doors to a public thirsty for new local offerings on June 1, 2013. Owned, operated and built from the ground up by the Mills family and friends, we are inspired by the Four Winds in gathering flavours from around the world to create our unique West Coast and European styles. We take great pleasure in the application of new world innovations while staying true to old world techniques. Motivated by the limitless potential of beer, as well as the great brewers who came before us, we aim to craft bold beers with character, depth, and balance.

Poured from 355mL can (pkg 09/05/24; thanks Terry). Clear-ish gold with white head. Chewy biscuit malt on the nose tons of resin and herbal hops on the taste with more of a light crystal malt backing. More old school style, not totally cohesive, could be age, but decent.|1/22/2025 8:06:53 AM|Canada|British Columbia|Delta|IPA

Poured from 355mL can (thanks Terry; pkg 07/11/24). Clear orange with small near white head. Thin, very feint hint of grape juice, some indistinct wheat malt. Muted and very underwhelming.

473 ml can. Pours a very dark brown with just a couple of bubbles; no head really. Aromas of roasted malts, faint oaky bourbon and a little coffee. Flavors follow same with bourbon more pronounced, plus a bit of chicory. Hot finish with alcohol also having a noticeable thinning effect. A bigger malt base with additional sweetness would have made this top notch.

Black colour, tan head. Aroma of brown sugar, malt delicate bourbon. Full bodied, sweet, more smooth than the average imperial stout; excellent balance between mellow flavours (malt, caramel) and sharp flavours (roasted malts); rich, fruity, elegant; alcohol warmth, but not boozy. Refreshing for the heart, such a drinkable imperial stout. Excellent.

473mL can, pours a minimally hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma has some car fumes, piney hops, light resinous hop oils, and biscuity malt. Flavour is much the same, with piney hops, bitter resinous hop oils, citrus, and crisp biscuity malt. Bitter finish, with an oily, dank finish. Not the most vibrant or robust hop expression but it’s well-constructed.

473mL can, pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma reveals faint, relatively low-quality whiskey barrels (thanks, Jim Beam), with gentle toasted malt underneath. Flavour reveals medium roast, followed by prominent Jim Beam - this really has its price - and rather thin malts to back. This has to be the worst Boreas vintage yet. Why use JB? The base malts also don't seem that great. It's still decent, especially for the price, but this has gone downhill, sadly.

473 ml can. Pours a bright amber with moderate head. Aromas of pineapple, citrus, pine resin, and biscuity malts. Flavors of candied pineapple, pine resin, bitter citrus and dry toasted malts. Very good. One of the best West Coast IPAs from Four Winds IMHO.
