Associated Venue: Alaskan Brewing Company
Established in 1986
In 1986, 28-year-olds Marcy and Geoff Larson reignited that tradition when they opened the Alaskan Brewing Company, the 67th independent brewery in the country and the first brewery in Juneau since Prohibition. Alaskan beers reflect many of the same characteristics of beers that were brewed here during the gold rush era. From the historically based Alaskan Amber recipe to alder-smoked malts and Sitka spruce tips, Alaskan beers reflect Juneau’s local brewing history and innovation.

Bomber. Three days before the Best By Date, so make of that what you will. Aroma is floral, perfumy, caramel. Pours slightly hazy new penny copper with a one finger bone white head with decent retention. Taste has a moderate pithy bitterness and some significant caramel malt sweetness.

12 oz from a variety pack. Aroma has notes of grapefruit, flowers, lemon. Pours slightly hazy golden with a one finger bone white head with decent retention. Taste is lightly bitter. More like a bland golden ale than an IPA.

12oz can. Pretty enjoyable. More bready and dry than spicy or zesty. Easy drinking, some pleasant lager tone. Not really true in a traditional sense, but still good.

12 oz from a six pack. Aroma is grassy, grainy, doughy. Pours clear golden with a large off white head with excellent retention. Taste has a bready malt sweetness backed by moderate herbal hop bitterness; has an unfortunate metallic off-note that doesn’t distract too much, but definitely lowers the score.

12oz can. Light golden color with a thin white head. Tropical fruit aroma, sweet and musty. Soft sweet tropical fruit flavor with a crisp wheaty end. Has an odd lingering finish.

So, old school or NE style IPA? The label gives nothing away. And I have my preference so let’s proceed. 12 oz can from the HEB that specializes in singles. Started with a Teku glass tonight, no reason to shake that up. The pour is a vibrant gold-yellow topped by a stupendous head of snowy white foam. I smell, hmm, citrus juice predominantly with a bit of pine. A drink, yes, orange juice, grass, wood and enough hops to get by. Thin in the mouth. Another in the changing guard of IPAs.

Can. Clear golden pour with a smallish white head. The aroma is straw and some grass. The taste is corn, thyme, minerals and grass in a cracker malt base. Also, I get a metallic element in the taste. The palate is full and viscous. Finishes short and dry with a bit of straw spice. Overall: OK easy drinking pils but not particularly distinguished.
