Description
The recipe for Bourgogne des Flandres was passed on to other family breweries under the watchful eye of Michel Van Houtryve. From 1985 onwards Bourgogne des Flandres was brewed at Timmermans Brewery in Itterbeek, the oldest Lambic brewery in he world. In 1993 John Martin took over Timmermans Brewery. As a result, Bourgogne des Flanders ended up in the Martin’s Finest Beer Selection among other classics.

With Anthony Martin at the helm of the company, Bourgogne des Flandres became part of the Finest Beer Selection and its reputation was reaffirmed with the creation of a new brewery just a stone’s throw from the original Den Os Brewery in 2015.

draft: sweet with some artificial sweetness & cherries + Chinese plum candy, minor funk, touch of wood (not oak but more like furniture), it misses the touch of tart that the “brune” version has, lack of carbonation, this is just about as much a sour ale as the Timmermans lambic’s are lambic’sEarlier Rating: 3/14/2011 Total Score: 4bottle@Kulminator: starts out with sweet (but not overly so) cherries with a hint of oak and ends with a sour taste (somewhat akin a Flanders Red Ale or Brown), very refreshing, balanced with a medium body, great beer & perfect entry into sour beers

[3/5/11] Bottle at Kulminator in Antwerp. Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, some fruitiness and a light woody hint. Sweet flavor with a tiny bit of sourness, malt, sugar and cherry hints. Medium-bodied. Drinkable but way to clean and sweet.

Bottle: Not sure if this is an Italian only beer since I couldn’t find much info on their site or online. Poured a light translucent brown with a bubble off white head. Aroma is light malts, leafy, and spice. Taste is sweet malt broken up by spice and dry leafiness.

Bottle: Not sure if this is an Italian only beer since I couldn’t find much info on their site or online. Pours a murky blonde with a white head. Aroma is pungent with fruit and some spice. Taste is fruity, not sweet nor very interesting to the palate.

(Bottle, 0.33 l) The beer poured dark reddish brown and almost clear. Its head was medium sizdd and white. Aroam had souress, mildly berries and maltiness. Palate was medium bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were matls, berries, mildly sourness, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste sour and dry. A bit lame sour ale. All the necessary components were there but they were too mild.

33cl bottle - not a dubbel - this has the sweet-n-sour with mild acidity characteristics of an oud bruin - aroma is a mix of sweetness (vanilla, caramel), acidity and fruity esters - a light funk, oak and vinegar character on a deep inhale - spritz-y, soda-like carbonation - cherry sweetness comes first - but is quickly covered up but moderate acidity/tartness - not very complex up front - however, moderate oak and a very subtle but complex earthy/funk quality eventually settles in on the palate - it’s a mixed bag really, as this sort of tastes like a flemish sour mixed with cherry soda - meh.

Bottle sampled at the Top of the Hops Beer Festival, Charlottesville, VA, 9/11/10. Pours a clear ruby color with a medium head. Decent head retention and lacing. Tart and earthy aroma with some citrus notes. The taste is sweet and sugary, faint tartness and an earthy finish. Medium bodied.

Pours with a soft and quickly disappearing head and a clear yellow body. Aroma of citrus, dirty socks, random light cereal. Taste is a heavy hoppy mix with some alcohol and slight grain notes on the end. Yet, it’s a pretty typical blonde Belgian ale - but that’s not to discount it too much, it’s reliable and drinkable, but it just doesn’t stand out.

Pours with barely any head and a dark brown body with little carbonation. Aroma is rye bread, spices, barley. Taste is sweet mud, a bit of sour ale, some chocolate. Nice, in fact, a good sipping beer.
