Hanssens Artisanaal
Microbrewery
in Dworp,
Flemish Brabant,
Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: Hanssens Artisanaal
Established in 1871
Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

Bottle from Utobeer, I think. I keptthis for ages waiting for the right moment. I love gueuze but know that it will normally fall into the 3.8-4.2 range for me as the sourness makes it too extreme for me. Beautiful amber colour, with thin ring of off white head. Sour funky aroma. Really funky actualy. Sharp in mouth. Lemon juice and more funkiness in mouth. Sharp funky lemon finish. Pretty extreme to be honest, very acidic. I prefer Girardin and Boon to this. Still a lovely example of this limited beer style.

Bottled (9% ABV, thanks to joergen & co). Hazy orange colour, small white head. Aroma is a mix of mead (the honey) and gueuze. Flavour is honey and sourness. Strange mix, a lovely idea, which works quite well, atleast for me.

(Bottle) Colour is pale amber with a big, frothy, white head, disappearing after a while. Surprisingly clear. Nose is wineous and acidic with notes of citrus, grapefruit, green apples, stable, sweaty horse and hints of vinegar and even some smoke. Musty, acidic taste with grapefruit, apricots, barn yard, horse blanket. Harsh but very well balanced. Absolutely magnificent, one of the best gueuzes I’ve tried.

Bottle: Poured a light red/brown color lambic with no head or carbonation. Aroma of funk and horse blanket is quite strong with some very subtle strawberry in the back. Taste is mix of sour and funky lambic with an extra dose of horse blanket with some faint strawberry also noticeable. Not sure if this lack some aging or if the balance is wrong but definitely not one the best lambic fruit that I have tasted.

Bottled, 37.5cl chamgagne-cork. Unclear, orange beer with some clouds and a nice white head. The nose is barnyard, apple, fruit, yeast, cellar and quite sour. Nice flavor with yeast, cellar, citrus and green apples. Quite astringent and fizzy in the mouth, with a long sour finish. Really lovely after 5 Swedish swills. Palate-cleaning. Rating: 7-4-7-4-15-3.7. (060824)
Bottle, 37.5cl corked. A hazy, orange beer with a white head. Horse blanket, some wheat and citrus in the aroma. The flavor is much the same, but the citrus and horse blanket are more evident than the wheat. Astringent, tart and citrusy. Plain lovely, more-ish and refreshing. (080926)
