Description
Poppyland Brewery occupies a small section of what was Allen’s Garage in West Street Cromer. The brewery was set up in 2012 by Martin Warren with the aim of producing small batches of top-quality beer using unusual processes and ingredients to produce “different and interesting” beers.

It is beer that’s based in north Norfolk, using barley grown and malted in locally, plus ingredients sometimes locally foraged but not excluding anything from anywhere in the world. Beer is brewed in small quantities 200 – 300 litres and either bottled or casked. All operations, from the formulation of the recipe to the design of the labels, is carried out in house.

Martin retired at the end of 2018 and Dave Cornell took over the brewery from the beginning of 2019. We have continued to follow the philosophy that has worked so well and the strapline ‘Adventures in beer start here…’ is as relevant nowadays as it was from the outset of the brewery.

Murky red - brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is airy and semi dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Smooth malts, rich and I fancy a little spicy. Mellow smoke. Punchy plummy fruits, red berries. Some bitterness on the back end. It all comes together pretty well, that said I can't help thinking the yeast dominates the Chevalier malts and Ernest hops. Still - nice rich flavoursome and unusual beer. Not a sour red/brown but hard to say exactly where it should go.

Quite a surprise for a Norwegian to find a 330ml bottle of this one at the ABV store in Norwich. Cloudy dark brown body. Bubbly beige head, scattered lacing on the glass. Dark doughy aromas, woody. Taste of dark dough, wood, yeast and juniper. Doughy ending. Different and interesting, far from great though. (Shared with djoeye and Finn during a rating session in Tromsø 31.01.2018).

Flaske 330ml spandert av Rune. Delt med ham og djoeye i WCveien 31 Jan 18. Dyprød / svart. Lavt luftig skum med litt farge. Lett fjøsaroma med hint av metall. Smaken innholdsrik. Metall & kjemi. Mer interessant enn god.

375ml corked and caged bottle. 6.2%. Obviously a new batch that isn’t limited to 72 bottles. Picked up at the brewery. Opens with very little drama, that is unusual for many a Poppyland Beer! Not a looker, this. Hazy, dirty gold. No head. Looks dull and flat. Nose has wheaty grain. Touch of mosaic, berry hop. Taste is lightly sour, and fairly dry. Dull mouthfeel. Fairly flat. Light sour finish. Poor.
