Description
Poppyland Brewery occupies a small section of what was Allen’s Garage in West Street Cromer. The brewery was set up in 2012 by Martin Warren with the aim of producing small batches of top-quality beer using unusual processes and ingredients to produce “different and interesting” beers.

It is beer that’s based in north Norfolk, using barley grown and malted in locally, plus ingredients sometimes locally foraged but not excluding anything from anywhere in the world. Beer is brewed in small quantities 200 – 300 litres and either bottled or casked. All operations, from the formulation of the recipe to the design of the labels, is carried out in house.

Martin retired at the end of 2018 and Dave Cornell took over the brewery from the beginning of 2019. We have continued to follow the philosophy that has worked so well and the strapline ‘Adventures in beer start here…’ is as relevant nowadays as it was from the outset of the brewery.

Bottle, packaged 27.05.17. 8.5%. Picked up at the brewery. Very dark, chocolate brown. A bit muddy. Slimmest halo of tan head. Some legs. Nose has soft oak. Woody booze, possibly whisky. Earthy coffee. Bitumen. Touch of bonfire toffee. Taste has a dark chocolate sweetness, with earthy, woody dryness. Low carbonation matches the earthiness well. Some twang on it. Fairy fruity, woody bitterness to finish.

Bottle, picked up at the brewery. Oh blimey. Where to start? Very murky, dark red. Dense, bubbly, lasting, lacing, pale beige head. Nose has red wine dregs. Red wine dregs with tab ends in. Mushroom must. Baked chestnut. Some blackberry. Whoa. Taste is sour, musty and earthy. Some fairly intense bitterness. Oily mouthfeel, with some acidity at the same time. Sour and musty bitterness to finish. Oh. Bonkers, but not necessarily in a good way.

Bottle, picked up at the brewery. Copper colour. Lightly hazy. Slim ring of white. Not a looker, especially. Nose has stewed hop. Barley sugar sweets. Some sticking plaster. Missus just said, “Jesus Christ”. Taste is chewy sweet. Medicinal bitterness. Heavy on the palate. Huge bitterness to finish. Whoa. This isn’t on par with Poppyland’s usual output.

Bottle, from the grocers / Post Office in Ringstead, Norfolk. Dark yellow. Soft haze. Swirl of white head. Nose has preserved lemon. Brine. Floral herb. Hint of grapefruit. Clean malt backdrop. Taste is dry, lightly sour, and lightly bitter. As with a lot of Poppyland brews, there is a definite salinity in there. Light body. Lightest touch of acidity. More of the same to finish. Nice one. Should be on here as a Sour / Wild Ale.

Unlabelled bottle, courtesy of the brewer. Cheers! Very lively, clear gold. Thick foam of noisy, bright white head. Nose has a touch of brett like funk. The Sorachi is holding on well here, giving notes of lemon rind and a definite hit of coconut. A bit earthy and fusty. Smells great. Taste is lightly tangy and crisp, mineraly dry. Super clean mouthfeel. Lively, bright carbonation. Tangy and dry finish. Nowhere near how it set out to be, but it’s took on a little bug and turned itself into a very fine beer!

Bottle, picked up at the brewery. Hazy, pale amber. Dense, glossy topped, lasting, lacing, pale beige head. Nose has lemon and lime. Spicy rye. Scorched grapefruit. Hint of grated ginger. Typically unusual, and intriguing, Poppyland character to this. Taste sets off sweet, with some spicy, scorched citrus bitterness. Medium body. A little oily and slick. Fine carbonation. Bitterness builds on the finish with a light dry close. Great stuff.
