Description
Poppyland Brewery occupies a small section of what was Allen’s Garage in West Street Cromer. The brewery was set up in 2012 by Martin Warren with the aim of producing small batches of top-quality beer using unusual processes and ingredients to produce “different and interesting” beers.

It is beer that’s based in north Norfolk, using barley grown and malted in locally, plus ingredients sometimes locally foraged but not excluding anything from anywhere in the world. Beer is brewed in small quantities 200 – 300 litres and either bottled or casked. All operations, from the formulation of the recipe to the design of the labels, is carried out in house.

Martin retired at the end of 2018 and Dave Cornell took over the brewery from the beginning of 2019. We have continued to follow the philosophy that has worked so well and the strapline ‘Adventures in beer start here…’ is as relevant nowadays as it was from the outset of the brewery.

Bottle from Hoptimism. Coffee and cocoa aroma. Bitter berry edge. Dark and glossy. Creamy beige head starts off promisingly but soon fades. Medium-heavy bitter. Dark chocolate and charcoal. As I drink more a subtle sweetness comes through - vanilla cream and burnt caramel. Even a touch of salt. Thick and oily. Flat-average carbonation. Low key astringent finish. Particularly enjoying the palate but overall a damn good Imperial Porter.

Bottle from Cromer Farm & Health Shop. Have been wanting to try this brewery for ages, glad I finally got the chance. Murky orange-amber with no head and very little fizz. The unflattering description on the bottle fits this well; it's definitely brackish, with light salt and sourness, distinct seaweed notes (presumably the samphire), and an earthy background. While this may not sound appealing, it actually works surprisingly well, and is quite a more-ish brew. It also went damn well with fish and chips. Well done to Poppyland on making something so unique and interesting. It's with great sadness that I hear this brewery is to close and therefore this is regretfully probably going to be the only beer of theirs that I ever get to try.

Bottle shared in London - cheers to Kenny. Pours unclear gold with a foamy white head. Musty, bitter, has some ripe citrus, crackery pale malts, minimal yeast expression. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes with notes of damp grass, ripe melon. So so.

Craft Islington. Bottleshare. Light haze on this gold beer, no head. Palate is light and fairly dry, modest fine carbonation. Thin malts. Somewhat musty and ripe quince. That's about that. Light semi dry finish. Hmm. Not hating this but it's not offering much up either.
