Handpull cask at the King's Head, Leicester. Light gold and clear with an uneven small white head. Malty aroma, caramel. Sweet malty taste with good use of the grapefruit Citra hop. Intense grapefruit bitterness in the finish. Not the greatest use of Citra in the world but it certainly adds a lovely lift to a very English golden. Good beer all round.

After spending nearly a couple of hundred pounds on beer in Edinburgh last week this is a budget night after work on a Saturday evening. The third Wetherspoon in a row and very similar easy enough hopped brews. This one has a tad more backbone through its strength.

Clear golden and smoothish. Hopped brew, slips down the palate as well as it looks. Wetherspoon poured.

The cheapest bought drink of the year so far - but it is a provincial Wetherspoon pour. Full-bodied, it hides its strength well through a flavoursome hoppiness.

Traditional in style, towards but not quite roasted, but tasty dark malts nevertheless. Mahogany colour.

Cask at Moon Under Water, Manchester. Dark mahogany with creamy looking beige head. Notes of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, liquorice - all good although maybe a touch light in flavour. Slick mouthfeel, low carbonation.
