Description
Arkell’s Brewery was established in 1843 by John Arkell and 175 years later, is one of less than thirty family breweries remaining in the UK. As Swindon’s oldest business, Arkell’s has kept its founding values alive and continues to produce local beer for local customers. These values have been continued by the four family members in charge today; Chairman James Arkell, his cousin Nick Arkell, Head of Sales, and James’ sons George Arkell, and Alex Arkell are Managing Director and Head Brewer respectively.

Bottle. Amber-red, next to no head. Crisp but a touch thin, it has a light but pleasant sweetness throughout.

Cask gravity at the Wandsworth beer fest preview night 26/03/14. Golden light copper colour with a light haze and a fleeting off white head. Aroma is caramel malt and a bit of diacetyl. Some stale grassy hop in the nose as well. Flavour is metallic and bitter rough grassy hop. Palate is thin and watery. Rough bitterness lingers. Not impressed.

Cask @ The Castle, Bedford. Dark gold/copper with a smallish but lively head for a cask ale. Sulphurous aroma which fades to light herby and biscuit note with a hint of soft fruit. Taste is full and sweet with a bitter finish. I find the aftertaste somewhat acrid. An interesting ale, well-made but a bit unbalanced. Won’t be to everyone’s taste.

Hand-pulled pint in my local Wetherspoons on 28th Feb 2014. This malty brew poured a good deep reddy amber colour: on top an off-white foam that hung around. Semi-sweet malty molasses are evident from the start, both in the aroma and in the taste. The hops only arrive towards the end of each sip and then only to stop the brew being too sweet. You can choose between toffee, caramel or even dark fruits for the dominant flavour: I’ll go for toffee. I like maltier beers and this suited my taste buds nicely. The depth of body and maltiness hid the alcohol very well and overall it came across as a very good beer for me.

Cask at GBBF 2013 - London. Pours clear, orange-gold with a light, white cream head. Nice, light dried citrus on the nose, orange especially. Light to medium sweet flavor with some bready pale malts, further orange citrus and light hay bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate sweetness to finish with some juicy, citrusy hops. Fine.

Cask gravity at White Cliffs BF 2014. Clear mid brown colour no head. Diacetyl on the aroma and in the flavour. To me undrinkable. Sorry.

An unexpected Christmas present from the wife: 500ml bottle, best before 2nd Apr 14, poured into two ’Countryman half-pint tankards’ at home on 31st Dec 13. The good lady wanting to try her present to me (she actually thought it was fine, we disagreed). Pours a golden amber colour, bright, clear and clean, very little head and what there was did a runner very quickly. Not a lot of honey in the aroma or taste. In fact I’m not too sure what’s going on here ’full stop’. There is a distinct lack of flavour until the beer warmed a little in the tankards and not much even then. Hints of floral hops in the warming esters but it doesn’t remind me of honey or even an English Country garden. This beer just let itself down, the brewery down and England in general! Very disappointed by my last review of 2013.

Clear 500ml Bottle, 5.0% ABV: BBD 24 Jun 14, poured into a UK pint sleeve at home on 30 Dec 13. Light amber to golden brew with a thin white head. Malty molasses blend in with some strange semi-spiced hop esters: couldn’t figure out the weird aroma at all. The taste is also on the strange side, malty lead but again with a different set of flavours difficult to pin down. Slight toffee apple feel to the taste as it warms. OK and certainly different.
