[Cask at Reading Beer Festival] Deep amber with a moderate loose white head. Toffee and biscuits with a little red apple and ginger. Rather sweet and cloying, like a GK beer with less hops. Not much to it really though. c7

Bottle. Nose is coffee, malt and a hint of cola. Apperance is dark brown with limited head. Flat. Taste is very shallow, Slight coffee, but a strong (and badly chosen) lemon note in the middle, leaving an acidy finish. The palate (as with all Hornbeam beers I have tried) is atrocious, watery, flat and thin. Overall a very poor beer. I am of the suspicion (having tried a few) Hornbeam simply can’t produce bottled beer worth drinking, I suspect the casks maybe better given other reviews. Avoid in the bottle.

Bottle. Nose is light bitter, nettle, slightly soapy, slightly musty. Goldern amber in colour with no head at all. Taste is lightly bitter, notes of orange, honey, limited hops. Finish is a lightly nettle bitter. Mouthfeel is awful, no carbonation to speak of, slightly oily. Overall a decent session beer, but not one I would seek out again.

Gravity dispense at Merton Winter BF ’13. Lightly hazed blonde with a thin bubbly white head that dissipates to the edge leaving a thin film. Nose is citrus, pale malt, apricot, hint of piss. Taste comprises pale malt, touch of honey, lemon, floral tones. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation with light bitterness in the finish. OK - file under ’W’ for whelmed!

Cask, gravity, Merton Winter Beer Festival Feb 2013 w/e of Friday 15th, Saturday 16th February 2013 Pours gold with a slim white head, maybe a tiny bit of haze. I like Hornbeam beers but I found this to be a little lacking, it seemed rather too safe. It ticked the citrussy, reasonably bitter decent session golden ale boxes, but I expected a little more from Hornbeam and sadly this didn’t deliver it, ’could do better’ A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov12 3.1

Certainly has a chestnut appearance, quite an ordinary bitter in its character.
