'Phoenix Nights' Phoenix Club glowed when Den Perry set it on fire. Clear golden with a creamy head. Evident in its aroma, white chocolate gets very stated in taste, towards overbearing levels but not quite, however it has a very easy drinking texture, which helps. Vanilla is prevalent too. Second of a trio of Lees beers.

Not my favourite pale ale/bitter but an acceptable couple of pints while watching England beat Australia in an autumn rugby international. Draught in The Heaton, Heaton Mersey.

The biscuit barrel at my grandparents was my favourite, deep and always a full tin of excellent choices for a sweet-tooth child! Darker clear amber, good autumnal floral notes coupled with a few biscuit styled malty additions. Its smooth texture is notable too.

Moonshadow by Cat Stevens was the rememberable often used walk-in to Assembly music at my primary school. Smoke Shadow is a lightly smoked, but enough to dominate styled beer with a very easy, somewhat watery texture and a sweet berry aroma.

Classic bitter with a twist! Copper coloured with a frothy white head and a soft toffee aroma. Light bodied, fresh, sweet caramel malt, subtle fruity notes, mellow floral hop bitterness and a dry grapefuity bitter finish.

Cask at Bull & Stirrup, Chester. Pours “bitter brown” with a small off-white head and good lacing. The aroma has malts and a hint of marmalade. In the mouth it is slightly sweet to start with but bitterness soon makes its presence felt. Flavour majors on malts and rye plus hints of grapefruit, pine and (later) spice. Finish is slightly dry. It’s reasonable.
