Bottle split at CBC tasting, thanks to the Danny, 16/07/18. Hazed chestnut brown with a well presented light beige cap. Nose is dried fruits, spice, caramel, light varnish, brown bread. Taste comprises brown sugars, fruit loaf, toffee, dates, light yeast, spice balance, tangy fruits. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough well balanced strong.

Bottle from the Old House, Wellingborough. Mid- to dark brown, almost opaque. A tiny ringlet of off-white head. Light aroma suggests cocoa bitters, oak, cherry, sarsaparilla. Really special taste. Starts with a woody and chocolatey sweetness, then a light hoppy acidic bitter. Some light spice and stone fruit follow, ending with chocolate fudge and cola nut in the aftertaste. Carbonation is heavy but not invasive. It's not an in-your-face beer. It's as subtle as it is spellbinding.

Bottle from Park Fever, Hither Green. Brown pour with a swiftly dissipating beige head. Aromas of molasses, raisin, treacle toffee, cola. Flavours of toffee, raisin, dried fruit, chocolate. Warm, sweet malty finish. Totally reminds me of a Rochefort 8. An excellent start!

Bottle from Beerhawk. A dark brown/amber coloured pour with a medium beige head on top that doesn't really last. Roasty, malty, chocolate, caramel, dark fruit aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, caramel, chocolate, dark fruit, hint of liquorice. Decent enough but this is not in the same league as the established dark Belgian Trappist beers, can't really understand the hype other than the fact it is 'Made in England'.

330ml bottle at Cloister's launch event. Pours darkest brown with a tight beige head. Aromas of cooked plum, liquorice, dark chocolate, light roast. Taste is roasted fig, more liquorice and hints of cracked leather. Slightly sweet finish. I'd put this firmly in the English Strong Ale traditional than Belgian Abbey. Reminded me of the darker brews out of Traquair House.

Semi opaque dark amber - brown beer, small tan head. Smooth palate, fairly dry, decent fine carbonation. Rich malts, touches of dark toffee, caramel and cream. Good ripe fruits, touch of fig. Smooth finish brings a mild tang. Richly malty and quite satisfying in that department. Great to see a British trappist beer, but where all these 4s are coming is beyond me, must be an outbreak of religious fervour!

Bottle. Hazy amber/brown body with a beige head that holds well. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of leather, stewed apple, wood, soy sauce and fig roll. Flavour of raisin, fruit loaf, red wine, flat Dr Pepper and salted brown bread. Medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. A rich, tasty beer with a savoury edge. I love the label design but (for aging a few bottles) I’d like to see a ‘bottled on’ date alongside the ‘best before’ date.
