Tasting @ Koelschtrinker. Grainy sweetish beginning. Sticky with grain there, caramel, smooth and soft. Easy to drink with warming parts, sweetish sticky in the end with hints of cake.

Tight creamy beige head stayed on a dark reddish brown still body. Dark chocolate & boozy aroma with a slight hint of coffee. Medium to full bodied, smooth, oily over the tongue with a little tingle down the throat. Taste is much as the aroma with dark chocolate, dark berry, malt, booziness & vinous tastes. Outstanding

First rating of 2019. From the Beer Cave, Edinburgh. Appearance - the initial CO2 release didn't seem as lovely as a Belgian trappist but it pours a reassuring dark brown with a fawn head that reminds of Westmalle Dubbel. Nose - nuts, prunes and treacle. Some chocolate lurking. Taste - more prunes and raisins. Burnt bread. Brown sugar. There's a residual edge of balsamic left on the tongue. Palate - medium bodied, tangy sweet and sour thing going on. Overall - similar to a Belgian Dubbel but with that tangy balsamic note at the end differentiates it. A good start to 2019.

Bottle while chilling at home after family Christmas dinner at my parents’. Couchlocked with The VU. Bottle courtesy of Maakun & Camarelli Dunplugge. Big thanks, merry X-mas. Very good looking bottle and label. Nice caligraphy and paper, almost Japanese and very desolate and monasterial, and Native! Pours near opaque dark brown with light tan head. Sweet roasted malts, brown malt, chocolate, barley, rye, raisans, dark tea, flint, berries, dates, licorice, herbs, rust, cookies, ink, soy sauce, charcoal. Moderate sweet, quite bitter, some umami, a grain of salt. Medium body with a light muddy and somewhat oily feel. Soft carbonation. Decent stuff, well done. Quality sipper that fits well in the Trappist line. --- Beer merged from original tick of Tynt Meadow on 07 Jan 2019 at 10:27 - Score: 8
