Description
Residents of Boston’s North Shore were first introduced to Ipswich Ale during the spring of 1991. With over 30 years of history behind it, Ipswich Ale has been in existence longer than nearly every other craft brewer in New England. Since that time, the Ipswich Ale portfolio of brands have developed into a tradition shared by not only the residents of eastern Massachusetts, but across New England.

Took over production for Newburyport Brewing in 2019, before both breweries were acquired by Huntwicke Capital Group later that year.

Began a partnership with RiverWalk Brewing in late 2023, moving the bulk of production to RiverWalk's facilities, while leaving a small pilot system in Ipswich for small batch and experimental brews.

Keg pour at the Powder Keg Beer and Chili Festival. Aroma is malty bread more than hops. Appearance is hazy golden brown with white frothy head with nice lacing and very trace sparkle. Taste is medium malty sweetness balanced with mild bitter with some corn chip. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with lively carbonation and bitter finish at the back of the mouth. Overall, a decent beer and true to the style but not a stand out.

Updated entry merging taster pour at Powder Keg Beer and Chili Festival with bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Greg & Jane's Beer and Wine. Appearance is nearly opaque black--very, very dark brown with light source directly behind--with light brown floaties along with decent sparkle at edges of glass, finger-width plus light brown foamy head with decent retention and minimal soapy lacing. Aroma is chocolate, dark fruit, rich, roasted malts, hint of alcohol. Taste is rich, sweet dark fruits and chocolate with bittersweet roasted malt backbone, slight coffee bitterness. Palate is medium bodied with silky, thick texture, lively carbonation with sweetness yielding to dry, earthy, roasted pleasantly bitter finish. Overall, aroma and taste border on RIS, slightly overcarbonated. Really nice.

Cask at GBBF ’15, day 1, 11/08/15. Very lightly hazed golden with a moderate off White covering. Nose is orange squash, tangerine, toasted bread, straw. Taste comprises orange pith, light mango trace, citric tinged straw, soft bread. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok ... could do with more of a hop injection.

Cask at GBBF 2015. It pours clear golden with a small white head. The nose is soft, doughy malt, graininess, stone fruits, restrained citrus and not a whole lot more. The taste is smooth, bitter, grainy, cracker, lemon, grapefruit, mild astringency and earth with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. A bit underwhelming, but drinkable enough.

GBBF Day 1. Cask. Hazy gold beer, tiny white head. Palate is light and smooth with decent fine carbonation. Mildly sweet pale malts, touch of honey. Decent citric peel - lemon and grapefruit. Semi sweet floralness and a touch of tropical fruits. Hops spicy semi dry finish. Good stuff. 3.7

GBBF Day 2. Cask. Lemondrop dry hop version. Curious about the lemondrop hops here, but this beer was not in the best condition. Some slight vinegar and acetone. But there is also lemon and lemon peel. Dry finish. Interesting, Could have been great if it was in better shape. 3.3

Undated bottle from Downtown liquors, drunk 8/7/15.
Good, frothy pour with a clear, peachy-gold body. White head is well-retained.
Soft tangerine, spongecake, lemon icing and some more robust spruce-like notes make their way out in the aroma. Clean, as always from Ipswich, with good attenuation and no astringency problems. No alcohol or flaws, low acidity/resin.
Straightforward citrus melange in the flavor also shows a little more challenging pine while lemons, tangerines and some strong grassiness round out the profile. Medium-dry body has a crackery-like malt texture, with ample carbonation and no alcohol or flaws. Not going to win the GABF gold, but it’s just another clean, well-made, unremarkable beer from Ipswich. Can certainly get behind that.
