I abandoned my one attempt to ramble up the Old Man Of Coniston due to looming black clouds, making it back down to Coniston before it lashed down. That proved a good decision, less so with this bland hopped effort. It does have a lovely traditional texture though and a gentle bitterness.

Half pint from the cask at The Old Hall Hotel, Hope, Derbyshire. Pours clear amber with a white head. Aromas & tastes of caramel, hints of spice & malt. Moderate body. Light bitter finish.

Old rating - On cask at the Lamplighter in Jersey. Pours a dark amber with a white creamy head. Aromas & tastes of flora, grain, grass & malt. Medium body. Mild bitter finish. A good few years since I tried this, feel it's lost something since Thwaites sold the Wainwright brand. Now its just average

A 500ml bottle in a presentation box from Waitrose at a premium price brought by my wife, it pours a near black with a tiny beige head. Aromas & tastes of roasted malt, liquorice, cocoa & hints of oak. Thin body. Light to medium malty bitter finish. Under whelming for an imperial stout.

Can't believe I've never rated this! Great pint that was perhaps served too cold, but a classic bitter nonetheless. Perfect refreshment after a day sailing on the Solent and before going on a complete bender.

500ml bottle from my local Morrisons store. Shared with Bob on 11th June 2025 at my place. Clean and clear golden pour, white crust on each glass. I thought this was OK for a 3.4% ABV cheap supermarket beer. Fruity and easy to drink, slight bitterness towards the finish. Sure it's thin rather than robust or heavy bodied, but it's not unpleasant or offensive.

[50cl bottle from Morrison's, Bracknell.] An amber pour with a thick white head and heavy carbonation; biscuity malt aroma; stewed malt taste with some caramel and a hint of grassy bitterness. Not great, but what do you expect at £1 a bottle these days?

Hand pulled half pint in the Old Post Office, Shrewsbury on 7th June 2025. Almost clear golden pour, white crown. Slight citrus aroma and taste, semi sweet malty undertone. Nothing to get excited about.
