Description
Labatt has deep roots in Canada stemming from its founder John Kinder. In 1847, a little more than a decade after arriving in London, Ontario from Ireland, John Kinder Labatt purchased London's Simcoe Street brewery in partnership with Samuel Eccles and by 1855 had become the brewery's sole proprietor. The brewery was later renamed John Labatt's Brewery, marking the beginning of one of Canada's largest and most successful companies.

In 1995, it was purchased by Belgian brewer Interbrew. Labatt is now part of the new company, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev).

First one of these this century IIRC. Can. Clear gold, modest white head. Grainy aroma with some tinned peach. Pretty vacantly sweet with very modest earthy and spicy bitterness.

Bottle from some dump bodega around Inwood. Notes from 12/25/10. Thin, matte black color. A gentle khaki head. Smells of licorice & charred bread. Simple enough. Watered down coffee & toasted brown bread, with anise drawing from the middle on through to the end. Soft texture, but it burns a bit going down. Solid, if somewhat bland.

I have a sizeable 740 ml/25 oz can found at a bodega-style store in downtown Montreal. I follow the usual prep for a tasting in the style, paperware not glassware. Pull the tab and let it breathe a moment, the smell is mostly beer-like. I take a big drink. Really nothing to complain about here, there’s no odd or off-putting influences. Instead I get grain, a touch of lemons possibly, some corn, crackers, water and cardboard. Fairly bland actually. Many of the 40s crowd offer a better taste.

12 oz bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown/black with am medium sized beige head that has fair retention. The aroma is strong with well roasted grains and some bitter coffee. The taste, like the aroma, is blackened grains, coffee and perhaps some burnt toast. The palate is medium and the carbonation is lively. Finishes long and dry with lingering burnt grains. Overall: decent. bought this making Welsh Rarebit, but it really did not work out well for that dish.

Caramel malt and grass aroma. Golden yellow with moderate white head and mild effervescence. Moderately sweet caramel malt and mildly bitter grass/fresh hay flavor. Good body - mild astringent finish. There's happiness calling my name from the bottom of a can of Puppers.
