Approximately 12 oz goblet draft at Martin City Brewing Company Pizza & Tap in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is dark black brown with not much tan head. The aroma is sharp, and pretty much straight rum. As that opens up, a bit of roast, some soy and vanilla become evident. Yikes, smells like this is going to be another out of balance booze bomb. The taste surprises, it is quite a bit gentler than the nose, and the mix of roast, soy and rum is really smooth and integrated. There is an additional fruit sweetness which also plays well. This really came together nicely, the taste has none of the sharpness of the nose. The palate is heavy to medium bodied with low carbonation and the roast rum with booze warming in the finish. Not normally my sort of beer, but this was nicely done.

Approximately 14 oz Willebecher draft at Martin City Brewing Company Pizza & Tap in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is a hazed golden orange ruby with a minimal off white head. The aroma is sweet orange citrus,, grass and floral hop along with softly sweet caramel malt. The malt and hop are very present and very fresh. The taste is the hop floral grass and bitterness right up front, the orange citrus sweet, then open up to clean fresh cracker Vienna malt flavors in the finish. As with the nose, super fresh and clean flavors. The Palate light to medium bodied with active carbonation and the dry bitter finish. Nice, really well made.

22 oz bomber purchased at the brewery in Martin City, Missouri. The pour is a hazed brown ruby with a ½ inch tan head. The aroma is caramel malt, cherry fruit sweet malt, along with a touch of metallic. As the beer warms, nice brown sugar and brandy are present. The taste is the strong sweet malt character along with wood and boozy brandy. Grass and earth are evident in back, which rounded the beer out nicely. At room temperature, the taste settles into a nice brown sugar brandy combination. The palate is medium to heavy bodied with soft carbonation and a lingering sweet booze finish, though not as much of an alcohol as was expected with the high ABV. Solid take on the style.

Goblet / tulip type glass draft at the brewpub in Martin City, Missouri. The pour is a hazed orange golden with a limited white head. The aroma is straw, sweet floral and clove yeast. All aromas are pretty muted. The taste is a nice blend of straw, sweet floral, the clove herbal yeast and warming alcohol. The straw-grass character is the dominant flavor, though decent integration of flavors. The palate is medium to heavy bodied with low carbonation and a bit of grass and soft sweet in the back. Sweet alcohol booze also present in the finish. The herbal yeast character became more pronounced as the beer warmed. Nice take on a style that is not one of my favorites.

Goblet / tulip type glass draft at the brewpub in Martin City, Missouri. The pour is an opaque dark brown with a one inch light khaki head. Nice lace on the glass. The aroma is herbal yeast esters, roast malt, and a bit of spice. The taste is the roast malt, pine hop, grass and herbal yeast notes then finishes with a dry char. The palate is medium to light bodied with a dry clean char finish. I have really enjoyed these “Black Saisons” Martin City has done, unique flavor combination and cleanly executed.

Goblet / tulip type glass draft at the brewpub in Martin City, Missouri. The pour is mostly clear orange copper with a 1/2 inch off white head. The aroma starts a bit metallic along with black cherry tart and an earthiness. As the beer warms, the metallic fades some. The taste is clean, lightly tart, black cherry with floral notes and a touch of malt sweetness in the back. There is also a bit of funk to the finish as well. The palate is light bodied with active carbonation and the funk tart finish. Tasty and easy drinking beer.

Shaker pint draft at the brewpub in Martin City, Missouri. The pour is a hazed golden brown copper with a smallish off white head. The aroma is citrus hops and caramel malt - decent balance and fresh. The taste is bright hop citrus pine along with the malt flavor. The malt comes across a but sharp and “green”. Martin City 15 Pound Brown. Some evident alcohol in the back. The palate is medium bodied with active carbonation and the lingering sharp malt and alcohol in the dry finish. Not 100% my thing.

10 oz snifter draft at Martin City Pizza & Tap in Martin City, Missouri. The pour is black brown with a small khaki head. The aroma is bunch of oak, along with some pine. The taste is big bright oak up front, very woody, very fresh oak, as that subsides a bit, the pine hop is present, as is the roast malt. The palate is medium to light bodied with lower carbonation and more of the oak in the finish. Well executed, though too heavy on the wood for my personal taste.

Shaker pint nitro draft at Martin City Pizza & Tap in Martin City, Missouri. The pour is dark brown with a thick tan head. The aroma is roasted malt along with a strong Belgian yeast showing earth. The taste is the bright Belgian yeast along with sweetish malt, some grass and cracker. There is more floral Belgian yeast in the back. The palate is medium bodied with soft carbonation and a mineral yeast dry flinty finish. This was Interesting, had a lot of the same beats as Martin City’s black Saison.
