2012-12-04, draught at La Fine Mousse, Paris, 7-5-7-3-14=36
Dark mahogany color with compact head. Nice aroma of dusty and lightly roasted malts, some dark chocolate too. Smooth mouthfeel, and body above the expectations; roasted malt and some chocolate in the flavor, with some sustained that adds character; strong bitterness; also a light touch of roasted nuts in the end.
Interesting, quite aggressive though.

It’s overly carbonated, pouring a beautiful hazy light amber color, with a huge frothy head that reduces to a thin creamy layer, and a wild perlage in the beginning. The aroma has the usual good hopping for Thiriez, but with a light strange fruitiness, as result from the fermentation problem. The mouthfeel is smooth, with light malt flavor, some delicate and good hopping, light fruitiness, but here and there a vegetables touch is spoiling it. They know how to brew their beers, but it’s the second one from Thiriez with a light infection going on…

Cloudy blond color. It has some sweet malty aroma, with a citrusy touch. As pouring it, it was dense (as much as possible for a low gravity Ale), and indeed the body is reasonable, with a good flavor of dry malt and light cereals. I wonder which hop they use (Golding? Hallertau?), but indeed it’s good, both for the quite strong bitterness and its aromatic contribution. A good one in the French beer landscape.

Courtesy of Degarth. Pours cloudy hazy orange with straw like edges. The head is frothy tan. The aroma is mildly spicy coriander with apples, lemon, mild raisin notes, mild pepper, raspberry and a hint of sweetness. These all seem like notes I can smell but it is really tough to pin this one down. The taste is light, lively and peppy with mild tart lemons to start that grow into smooth mild fruitiness from apples, lemons, sweet muted pears and a hint of pepper. I get brief chalk before the finish along with a hint of red wine. I don’t get as much spice in the flavor as the nose.

Bottle: Poured a foamy mess of yellow color and huge white head. The head really pissed me off, looked like an ice cream cone. Aroma was light citrus and harvest. Taste was a bitter metallic hops with citrus and carbonation.

750mL green capped bottle. It pours a clear orange color. It smells of green herbs, pilsner malt and some fruit off flavors. Taste is light fresh pilsner malt with earthy light syrup. It’s got some cool earthy-herbal flavors but also the pilsner and some fruit off flavors detract from it, you know the French.

Biere de Noel. Pours orange into a snifter. Bright white head quickly recedes to hug rim. Apricot and yeast upfront with a crisp apple/pepper finish. Spicy and refreshing.

Hazy orange beer - nearly skunky European hop aroma, but once my American nose got used to it it was pleasant - other notes of spices and orange peel become present - moderately tangy, with apparent citrus peel and coriander - some innocuous yet tasty spice flavor - a tiny bit of acidity amplifies/compliments the citrus/orange flavor - quite quaffable, and a nice departure from the high gravity, over-spiced Christmas ales out there.

6.0% bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Aroma of yeast, citrus and light spice. Hazy orange gold color with lots of tiny bubbles and a quite huge white head. Medium body with quite creamy carbonation. A bit of mild earthiness, some caramel, some veg, some floral hop, some not so spicy yeast. It tends to drop into a dry state with herb/floral notes. It suddenly resolves into a dry fruitiness. It’s really good; really special; really hard to describe accurately. If you like real ale, I doubt you’ll regret having this one. The aroma persists from sip to sip. A trip.
