Description
Emile Vanhonsebrouck and his wife Louise De Poorter founded the Sint Jozef brewery in Ingelmunster. In 1922 the brothers Paul and Ernest Van Honsebrouck take over the brewery from their mother. In 1953 Luc Van Honsebrouck (son of Paul) becomes director. Luc realizes that the small Sint Jozef brewery isn't able to compete with the large pils breweries. He therefore decides to concentrate on the production of an old brown beer, naming it Bacchus, and he changes the name of the brewery to Vanhonsebrouck. The St-Louis Gueuze and Kriek were officially launched in 1958. In 2009 Xavier Vanhonsebrouck succeeds his father Luc. In 2016 the doors of the old brewery in Ingelmunster are permanently closed. The new site in Emelgem is now home to a brand new, fully integrated brewery, with the equipment to produce all of the Vanhonsebrouck beers. In the meantime Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck becomes the new official name.

(Bottle, Akkurat, Stockholm, 2 Sep) Colour is pale, golden amber, very small head. Nose is fruity with orange peel, marzipan and candy sugar, a bit closed. Taste is fruity with orange, mandarin, marzipan and candy sugar. Spicy hops in the warming finish. Sweet alcohol dominating the palate, but it stays within limits, not at all unbalanced. Quite drinkable but lacking something extra in taste.

Best before 11/2004, 250mL capped bottle from Jacob Lovenlund, consumed on 8/5/06. So almost 3 years old, I think? That or 4 years old, I can’t imagine the brewery recommends keeping this pasteurised, filtered crap much longer than 1 year.
The appearance says Belgian ambree, as it’s quite ruddy-orange and too dark for a true gueuze (and this is obviously no specialty gueuze). Off-white head is large, foamy/fizzy and quickly recedes to partial cover and then ring, leaving little-to-no lacing behind. Fizzy, large bubbles rise languidly to the top, but can not bolster the head for long.
Heavily, heavily sugary in the nose. It pretty much smells like priming sugar, like corn sugar/syrup, was used to give this beer aroma. DMS is certainly rampant. Behind the vegetal nightmare, lies a sugary, caramel-like "maltiness". Wheat is lightly dry, nutty. No alcohol in the nose. No lambic either.
Flavor - sigh....it’s like the rest of its brothers; chapeau, mort subite, lindemans, belle-vue, sadly lacking of any lambic notes, sugary, corny, vegetal, metallic, watery, cloying. Just a horrid mess. The good news is that I’m almost through the gauntlet of these fake gueuzes.

Dirty brown coloured with a thin off white head. Very classy flemish sour aroma, with grounde cherries, sweet candy notes and light acidic points. In mout, however, a pathetic and thin sour, with light cherries and tartess and watery like hell. Bottle at l’Autre Oeil, July 26, 2006.
