Description
Emile Vanhonsebrouck and his wife Louise De Poorter founded the Sint Jozef brewery in Ingelmunster. In 1922 the brothers Paul and Ernest Van Honsebrouck take over the brewery from their mother. In 1953 Luc Van Honsebrouck (son of Paul) becomes director. Luc realizes that the small Sint Jozef brewery isn't able to compete with the large pils breweries. He therefore decides to concentrate on the production of an old brown beer, naming it Bacchus, and he changes the name of the brewery to Vanhonsebrouck. The St-Louis Gueuze and Kriek were officially launched in 1958. In 2009 Xavier Vanhonsebrouck succeeds his father Luc. In 2016 the doors of the old brewery in Ingelmunster are permanently closed. The new site in Emelgem is now home to a brand new, fully integrated brewery, with the equipment to produce all of the Vanhonsebrouck beers. In the meantime Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck becomes the new official name.

Taster from bottle, at the Balmoral Brewhaha. Looks like currants are about the heaviest fruit flavor you can put into a beer. Big currant flavor and nose here, folks, that can’t help but overwhelm any beer base, but I guess that’s expected. Very sweet, too; I couldn’t locate much tartness. Kind of runs toward the flavor of those IHOP pancake syrups. If you know that going in and looking for it, this would be fine.

Bottle. Strong sweet raspberry aroma with light musty barnyard as well. Dark cherry red color with small head. Strong sweet-tart raspberry flavor - mild lambic mustiness. A sweet ’lambic’ - not traditional - very similar to Lindemans.

Bottle. Sweet cherry and musty basement aroma. Dark cherry red with small head. Sweet/sour cherry blended with musty flavor. Another non-traditional (or if you prefer fake) fruit lambic that is very sweet altough is does maintain some lambic qualities. If you like Lindemans you’ll like this but traditionalists will hate it for its inauthenticity.

Bottle. Beautiful pink head with good duration. Color is cherry red. Aroma is sweet cherry. Taste is fresh and cherry. A bit sour as well - but in a good sense.

Beer tasting sampler at Binny’s, Orland Park. A little trifecta at work here: tasing the Peche, Kriek, and now this. Not much in the tartness area, considering the style. Like the other two lambics I rated, this comes across as somewhat creamy more than anything else. Certainly has a lot of juice to it, but not much in the way of beer to match.

Beer tasting sampler at Binny’s, Orland Park. Almost a peaches & cream quality to it. Very little peach or lambic tartness. Comes across like a fizzy peach schnapps.

Beer tasting sampler at Binny’s, Orland Park. Looks like a cherry soda. Very fizzy and foamy. This has a more noticable fruit tartness than the Peche, but again, not much sourness considering the style.

Cherry red with white pinky head. Incredibly sweet. This is a kriek for beginners. Very easy drinkable and not very complex. Cherries throughout! Doesnt quite cut it for me!

Bottle: Poured a clear light copper color beer with a small fuzzy head with minimal retention. Aroma of peach syrup is totally dominant. The peach syrup, which I am not too fond of to begin with, and some very subtle sourness also dominate taste. I would have Lindemans pêche any days over this, which I guess says a lot about my fondness for peach based beer.
