189 years ago this month the Tolpuddle Martyrs received their pardon after convictions for Unionising. This Unity is a very tasty marriage of hops and bready notes. Some fruitiness too.

Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Clear copper coloured with a thin white head and a light prickle of carbonation. Great condition actually. Caramel up front, then plenty of fruity marmalade. There's a lasting dry, crackly finish of autumn leaves. I like the oranginess, but the aftertaste gets a bit unpleasant. Very traditionally British tasting; it's ok, but it's a long way from being the red IPA that the brewer claims it is.

Cask at Captain Alexander, Liverpool. Pours “bitter brown” with a small off-white head and good lacing. Floral hops and berry fruits in the aroma. In the mouth it is quite sweet but somewhat thin. Malts and caramel dominate the flavour with hints of traditional hops, honey and melon. Sweetness lasts into the finish. I suppose this is reasonable, but it’s rather bland. [ and IMHO not a Red IPA as it is neither red nor an IPA ]
