Description
The story of Bear Republic, like most other craft brewers, begins with homebrewing. It was the spark for our passion to create quality, hand-crafted beers. We are a family-owned brewery, located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. The company was established by the Norgrove family in 1995, with Richard G. Norgrove as brewmaster.

After 11 years of rapid growth, we opened our Factory 5 brewery in Cloverdale, California, where we brew and package all our beer that goes to market. We hand select our ingredients for each batch, the grains and hops we use are chosen for their unique characteristics and the recipes and formulations are patiently developed over time. Many recipes start as a home-brew and then develop into the commercial beer available in many retail outlets today. We pride ourselves in using our established methods while always looking to improve efficiencies and techniques that allow us to provide quality beer to share with the world.

Beginning 2023 thw brewery was acquired by Drake’s Brewing.

Bottle courtesy of Hogtownharry: Poured a dark brown color ale with a big dirty brown color head wit good retention. Aroma of big citrusy hops is quite powerful and dominant with some roasted sweet caramel malt also noticeable. Taste is almost entirely dominated by big citrus hops with a good caramel malt backbone. Body is about average and carbonation is slightly above average. If you like big citrus flavour beer from the west coast then this is probably going got be for you.

Draft at the Bistro BA Brew Fest 11/11/06; Nose of bourbon and rye bread, with a little spiciness mixed in; Hazy brown with a ring of bubbles around the glass; flavor of bourbon, alcohol and rye in a medium thin body, with an alcohol finish.

Dark copper pour with large off-white head that diminishes, but does not disappear. Floral nose with notes of pine, fruit, malts and rye malts. Flavor starts slightly sweet but quickly moves to bitter. Easy to taste the rye and hops. Medium body with watery texture and lively, fizzy carbonation. Not much stick to this in the finish. Moderate bitter finish. Very good.

Inviting appearance, sweet aroma and bitter taste are the three most noticable characteristics. Translucent red-brown body below a big, frothy head that sticks around. The big nose is full of malts, caramel, floral scents and grapefruit. Small notes of earthiness. Flavor is initially slightly sweet, but the hops quickly dominate filling the mouth with a long, bitter finish. Medium body and watery texture. Moderate carbonation. Dry finish.

This is nice but not outstanding. While cold, this is a little sour in a strange way. There is a malt base with considerable hops. I thought this was higher in abv than it actually is. Reminds me somewhat of an English imperial stout. Becomes more flavorful as it warms with some coffee and chocolate, minor red wine characteristics, and an abv that sneaks up on you.

22oz bomber. Clear amber color with lasting off white head. Nice caramel and coffee bean aroma. Flavor is much the same as the aroma with caramel and coffee. Can’t pick up on any hops

On tap at Horse Brass Pub, Portland. Copper with lasting beige head. Sherberty hop aroma, great raspberry fruit and then good dose of sherberty hop. It’s outstanding. Great balance and certainly one of my favourite beers of my 2 weeks in PNW.

Draft. Copper beer with an off-white head. Earthy, malty aroma. Careml flavor with some earthiness. Body is a little thin and weak. Light caramel lingers and there’s a little sweetness to this.
