Brouwerij Serafijn

Client Brewer in Heist-op-den-Berg, Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: Huisbrouwerij Achilles - Out of business

Established in 1999

Description
The microbrewery is founded by Achilles Van de Moer on the passion for special beers. After 7 years of trials with different beers, the decision to start a microbrewery in Itegem was made in 1999. The brand name of beers is “Serafijn”. All beers are high fermentation brews, with second fermentation in the bottle. Most of the beers are contract brewed, but some of them are also brewed at their own location.

In 2015 Achilles became part of Caupona bvba (of the Prik & Tik stores in Heist-op-den-Berg and Herselt). The brewery is now called ''Brouwerij Serafijn.'' That is the new company in Heist that houses the Serafijn beers. The former microbrewery in Itegem has been dismantled.

The beer is now brewed at the Pirlot brewery in Zandhoven.

Pours unclear brown. Good white head. Smell is bit sweet, not very intense. Taste is bitter, sweet, some earthy, herbal. Bitterness builds quite high here. Coffee notes, almost, but not quite. More spicyness in the back, as well as the earlier mentioned earthyness, forest-in-the-fall. Lovely.

Bottle @ home. Clear golden yellow coour with a fairly large white head. Smells malts, some iron, nothing crazy. Tastes malts, slightly weird but I’m not sure what it is and it’s not even that unpleasant. Medium body, nice carbo.

Commissioned by CVO Elishout COOVI (described as a ’didactic restaurant’, in Brussels) but now brewed at the ’Proef’brouwerij and no longer at Achilles (so I assume there should be slight differences with the original version). Bottle from Bezoekerscentrum De Lambiek in Alsemberg. Medium thick, egg-white, moussy head with decent retention, over a warm ’old gold’ coloured beer, clear with lively sparkling, misty with deposit. Sweet aroma of raw pineapple, powder sugar, dry coriander seed, honey, banana, red apple, orange, cantaloupe, canned apricots, wet grass, iron, a vague hint of plastic and some bubblegum. Fruity onset, apple peel, white grape, peach, hint of banana, sweetish with a basic sourish edge and some citrus refreshment, medium carbonation, soft and supple mouthfeel with somewhat thinnish, lightly oily body, pale and lightly caramelly malt sweetness with honeyish touch all the way through the finish, where a light, grassy, bit peppery hop bitterishness brings balance and a trace of bittersweet, resiny coriander - I would have been more surprised had this ingredient, for once, not been used - clings a bit to the throat, but mildly so. Correct, decent and balanced, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this, but it is, of course, just another simple Belgian blonde, which does not differentiate itself from litterally hundreds of others in the same style. Suits its purpose, but nothing to go hunting for.

Trevlig.
