Description
The history of the brewery dates back to 1679. At the end of the eighteenth century, Jacobus Liefmans settled in Oudenaarde and gave the brewery its name. It was around 1900 that Liefmans started filling maturation tanks with black cherries, on a small scale. Local farmers brought their excess crops of black cherries to Liefmans and swapped them for beer. One individual who played a key part in this was Rosa Merckx. She was closely involved in the brewery’s operations over several decades. Thanks to her encouragement, the cherry beer evolved into a real success story.

I think I've found the secret to enjoying sour Belgian fruit beers. The first is to keep drinking past the first few sips, until you adapt to the sourness, and the second is to drink them at over 55 deg F to allow a balancing sweetness to come in. This turned out to be a nice kriek, one of the best I've had. Nice tangy fruity aroma, some hint at cherriness. Red color, but not strange looking, could almost pass as a red ale in appearance. Light head, no retention, rather fizzy, as appropriate - any stillness would make this cloying. Definite tartness, plus a balancing sweetness (not at colder temps), and mild cherry flavors, and Belgian funkiness keep this complex rather than a one-dimensional sweet fruit beer.

Sampled draught. Mahogany coloured, not much of a head. Slightly acidic vinuous aroma. Ratherlight bodied, soft mouth feel, notes of vinegar and caramell. Perhaps just a touch of iron. Pleasantly refreshing slightly acidic finish.

Bottle
Pours a deep redish brown colour with a nice head. Acidic cherry stone aroma. Balsamic and vinous flavour with notes of oak and sourish cherries, there’s also a slight dash of toffee.

Extremely sour. This is just pure syrup what you're drinking. I cant imagine you can drink this as beer. It's not that bad, but for beer it certainly is!

Spicy aroma. Decent appearance, certainly not splendid. As you take a sip, the taste disappears very quickly and leaves a dry finish, with no more taste left.

Quite nice - deep garnet color, only the slightest of carbonation, no head. Initially rather sweet with a balancing tart cherry flavor. Background beerlike flavor - slightly and vaguely reminiscent of lambic. I first tasted a small sample at cellar temp - a bit overwhelmingly tart at that temp...and the dregs in the bottom of the glass looked like dissolved sugar! Is it sweetened? Then I heated it up and had it the proscribed way: very nice. Enjoyable to sit and sip and savor it slowly - a bit like mulled cider. I'm sure this is best on a cold autumn night - but believe or not, I had this with breakfast. Aroma is tart and cherryish.

I finally get to re-rate this beer, having rated it a 1.7 as a novice to sour beers. Boy am I glad to have returned to it. This is really really good stuff! Big sour aroma, granny smith apples rotting on the ground. Metallic/coppery. Acidic, yeasty, musty, vinous grapes. Big sour and caramelized flavors, vinous finish. Unexpectedly empty finish for all the sour malts it features. Brown color with a medium head and good lacing.
