Established in 1536
Generation.

Amber with olive and orangey highlights; small amberish head. Smoked ham nose, smoked beechwood, branches of fenouil, fire-heated chestnuts, hot bread and cool autumn leaves. Almost metallic, coppery smoked taste, as from food heated in a copper pot; honey-cured smoked ham, with bread and salted butter included, all liquidised and pepped up with fresh spring water. Medium bodied, lighter than the Märzen or the Schlenkerla. Super, one of my favourite styles. The Märzen I seem to have liked better, the Schlenkerla will always be more brutal, less refined.

A hazy orange beer with a huge light orange head. The aroma is sweet with notes of wheat, yeast, and oranges. While the flavor is sweet with notes of wheat and yeast and a thin body.

Aroma of sweet fruit and shoe leather. A great looking beer. Cloudy, red, and a thick head. A chemical flavor followed by a light smoked taste. November 28, 2004. 5/5/5/2/12. Nine years after first trying this beer from a bottle. and having learned to love smoked beers, I can substantially raise my score after having it on draught at Spezial. Clear brown color. Lots of smoke in the aroma. Roasted meat and dry malt. The smoke is dominant here, and that is great.

Bottle. Smoked and banana fruitiness of a Weizen nicely balanced. Fairly clear yellow appearance - next to no cloudiness. Slight banana/clove flavor up front with the smoky finish but not really a wood smoke.

Bottle. Wood smoke aroma - not too strong. Dark tan with very little head. Medium smoked flavor well balanced with a nice hops flavor. This is much milder than Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Marzen - smoked flavor and aroma is much less pronounced. This one I could drink regularly. Rerate of bottle I aged 2 yrs - now has a sour barley malt arome mixed with the wood smoke. Hazy reddish amber color with decent head. Has a stale barley malt flavor mixed with the smokiness - the strange thing is that is really works well - like a very nice salami. Germans call their beer ’liquid bread’ but this could be ’liquid meat’.

Dark copper color, with the aroma of a newly lit campfire, and the smell of fresh logs waiting to be added - many rauchbiers, in my opinion, wind up tasting like bacon, but this one finds a nice balance - it has enough sweetness to mellow out the smoke, like a marshmallow burned over flaming hickory - the finish is hops and smoke, with a lingering, bock-ish, caramel flavor - nice beer.

2010-05-19, draught at Ølbaren, Copenhagen, 7-5-7-3-15=37
Red-amber color, dark; generous creamy head. Nice smoke aroma, wood, light dark caramel, bread, very light smoked sausages (it’s a sourish declination of smokeyness). The body strength is average, thus below the expected for a Märzen, with good dark caramel flavor, delicate smoke touch, almost no sugars; correct bitterness; the final also reminds some burnt paper. Good, balanced, well brewed, but without thrills.
2010-05-10, bottle, 6-4-7-4-14=35
Beautiful mahogany color with red and amber shades; minimal head. Aroma of smoke, malt; mild. Good caramel flavor; the body is not very strong, the mouthfeel a bit dry, not much Märzen overall, apart from a light residual sweetness in the middle; there is a pleasant, delicate smoke note. Correct bitterness; the final shows some dark caramel, and dryness. Well balanced, but it doesn’t reach the power of the Aecht Schlenkerla.

Dark amber color. Light smokey aroma. Some sweetness, malt, and smokey, a bit dry at the end, not convincing. Ordinary Rauchbier.

Hazy golden color. Light Weizen aroma, with some banana and very light smoked. Ordinary Weizen, with some smoked character. Overall, quite poor.

AOBF 04. Bottle. Yellow-golden, clear, but almost syrupy looking. Aroma of spicy lager yeast, full flavorful smoke (wood smoke, smoked fish, salt, pork rinds, earthiness). Flavor is full of charcoal notes, but mixed with good malt sweetness, quite creamy, very smooth. I’m not finding much lager quality, but that’s ok, because the smoke flavor is great (wouldnt expect any less from Bamberg). Other than that, not too much else goin on. Some light nuttiness, hints of earth.
