Poured from 12 oz.bottle(room temp) a nice deep gold with a fairly large head of foam that dissipated slowly leaving about a 1/8" layer in my brand new Secret Ale glass. ;^)
The smell is sweet to my nose telling me there's some malt character there.
The taste is definitely malty up front but it's not at all sugary sweet and then..there's the hop character moving in with the offsetting bitterness(I sense some lemon notes) creating a nicely balanced and very drinkeable Alt beer of which, I must admit, I've had very limited exposure to.(Alaskan Amber and a German brew whose name escapes me)
Bottom line: This is a very smooth yet tasty brew that would be on my regular rotation if it were available to me locally. My thanks to Nutbrown for including this in our trade!

From Mar 2006
Poured from 22oz bottle(room temp) a straw colour with a smallish head of foam that dissipated quickly. I also note that the carbonation level seems to be very low and that's ok with me.
The smell is very spicy with notes of clove as well as some yeasty sourness.
The taste has some of the clove noted in the smell but it's pushed into the background while other spices and a yeasty sweet and sour thingy take center stage. The finish is quite spicy and long lasting. Oh yeah, 7%abv eh? Well hidden!
Overall, I find the taste different from the Wits I've tried before and in this case, different=it's quite pleasing.
Bottom line: An easy drinking Witbier that must make the locals of this brewery very happy on a hot summer day. I recommend it.
Thanks again to Nutbrown!

This one pours from 750ml bottle(room temp) a clear amber with a huge head of foam that shrinks slowly to a solid layer with tons of lacing. A beautiful Ale to look at! Oh, btw, the cork was a bit difficult to get out but when it did, it exploded out of the bottle and hit my ceiling.
The smell is very malty but I also note a fruity nose, mainly dark fruit, some alcohol, and it has a roastiness to it.
The taste has a ton of caramel malt up front but it's done well because it isn't overly sweet. I'm getting a lot of flavours here..plum, roasted malt, a nuttiness, molasses, candy sugar, toffee, man, this is so complex and so interesting, I find it hard to describe all that is going on here. There is also a hop bitterness in the background; I guess that's how the sweetness is being controlled so well, eh? ;^)
Further sips in and I'm getting a nice warming from the alcohol content but heck, it's anything but harsh. What a smooth sipper and that makes for an Old Ale that has excellent drinkability!!
Bottom line: Yet another brew from Southampton that is a real gem. My sincerest thanks go out to Nutbrown for this sample and *all* the samples I got in trade. What a wonderful brewery...I couldn't recommend them enough!

From Dec 2006
2004 Vintage
Poured from 12oz bottle(room temp) a clear reddish gold with a large head of foam that eases back some but remains as a solid layer throughout the session. Oh, and there's plenty of lacing.
The smell has a huge nose of caramel malt with some hoppiness in the background.
The taste is very sweet up front. Nice caramel and butterscotch followed closely by some some hop bitterness and a good sour fruit bitterness. Very complex and very warming! A good one to drink on this cold snowy day. The finish is semi sweet and something that ends the flavours in a positive way. A great sipper, I doubt I could drink another one of these right away but that's not saying anything negative about it. I want to stretch this glass out. ;^)
Bottom line: I've held on to this bottle for a while now and it's quite the treat. I got a 2005 bottle waiting for me..maybe later today.
Thanks to Nutbrown for providing both bottles in a past trade!

Draught @ Malt&Mold. Hazy darkish yellow with small foamy white head, very faint pumpkin aroma, high carbonation, sweetish pumpkin taste with a bit of soapy flavor, thin body, abrupt finish with mild pumpkin aftertaste. The pumpkin flavor feels artificial.
