Description
Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station opened May 2013 in Point Loma’s now-historic Naval Training Center. Our newest restaurant venture celebrates the venue’s prior history as a U.S. Navy mess hall, while introducing new industrial and organic features of metal, concrete, reclaimed wood, plant life, water and glass. The restaurant encompasses more than 23,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor dining and bars, as well as a bocce ball court, outdoor cinema space and an 11,315-square-foot garden. True to our philosophy, we support an artisanal, natural approach to food, and are the largest restaurant purchaser of small-farm organic produce in San Diego County. Executive Chef Rich Sweeney offers an eclectic and creative menu of world-inspired cuisine, and our bar features 40 taps of exceptional craft beers, including Stone year-round and special releases and beers from other small breweries.

Keg at Stone Liberty Station, SD, 18/04/14. Clear chestnut brown with a moderate off white swirl and spotting. Nose is banana, yeast esters, toffee, spice, bubblegum, nutty tones. Taste comprises rich toffee, bubblegum, yeast, brown bread, spice. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok dubbel, pretty solid for the style, doesn’t get too sweet and sugary.

My first flight at Stone’s Liberty station was mostly lighter alcohol options, this being one of the weakest (my notes claimed 5.4% ABV). Golden, light golden in fact, sparse covering of wispy whiteness that might have been a head straight after the pour, but not by the time it came to my table outside. The nose was a blend of fruitiness and traces of malt molasses to come. The taste slightly more bitter than the aroma hints at, the malts being suppressed by the slightly citric hop content. Refreshing and pleasant enough, but not a real ’Stone’ beer as I know them!

Light to medium sweet flavor with aggressive bitterness, dirty leaves, earth, some toasty malts and grainy bread. Medium bodied with average carbonation. More heavy bitter grass and leaves to finish, some dusty pine, dried bread. Pretty ho hum, really.

Medium sweet flavor with more bready sweetness, leafy bitterness, subtle toffee, plums.medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Cool beer. On draft at the Holiday Ale Festival. Pours a black color with a medium beige head. A big spicy and milky lactose nose. The flavor is well made: bitter hops mix with aggressive spicing, some toast, sweet vanilla and cocoa. Very nice brew. A bit complex, but the core chai and lactose flavor is solid.

On tap at Stone Liberty Station, pours a hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma of smoked malt, some chilli peppers, and rye-like hops. Flavour brings out medium strength smoke above anything, drowning out any IPA-like character. Pretty smoky - not that elegant, but fairly enjoyable. Decent.

Growler from Stone World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido. This beer pours a clear dark amber color with a medium foamy light beige head that diminishes gradually to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark fruit, malt and caramel. Medium to full body with flavors of earthy malt, caramel and dark fruits. The finish is malty with a peaty aftertaste. Decent overall.
