Description
The first references to a brewery in the Weltenburg Monastery are to be found in the Weltenburg Nekrologium, in which it states that the master brewer died. Another scientifically recognized source is a recorded entry in the “Libellus Traditionum”, which is over 900 years old, and which dates from shortly before or after 1050.

In the barely millennium to the present day, monastic beer production in Weltenburg was only interrupted by the secularization from 1803 to 1846. In 1846 the brewery became monastery property again, and it has remained there to this day. The Weltenburg monastery brewery can therefore rightly be called the oldest monastery brewery in the world.

Hazy golden. Aroma is gooseberry untoasted toast light mandarin and light yeasty spices. Taste is sour fresh and unripe gooseberry with green yeasty base and light sweetness. Bready texture and light boozy notes as well. A bit too much on the green unripe side but still ok.

500ml bottle as part of a delivery from Beers of Europe and drunk at home. Golden brown and clear with a small smattering of off-white head. Caramel, honey, spicy yeast in the aroma. Sweet taste, more yeasty caramel in the mouth, with some medicinal bittering hops giving some balance in the finish. Body's fairly thin, with medium carbonation. Fairly typical Festbier, but not a bad one.

Bottled from Gabriel - Cheers! Large white foamy head on a clear golden coloured body. Grain & cereal aroma. Medium bodied, soft on the tongue with a foamy back. Sweet malt, berry, stone fruit & grain tastes with a lightly hopped finish. Easy going.

500ml bottle bought as part of a delivery from Beers of the World and drunk at home. Light yellow/gold, clear with a small white head. Malty, slightly resinous aroma. Sweet taste, malt-led, some chewy resin here, leading to bright and lightly astringent bittering. Medium body and carbonation.

Half-litre bottle: BB 20th December 2024. Drank at home on 27th August 2024, third beer in a mini-tasting session with myself (Margie out with old school friends). Clear and clean, bright amber body, two inch off-white foaming crown, it looked good in the German glass stein I poured it into. Soft malty flavour and aroma, very little hop action, nose or taste wise. Caramel and toffee like semi-sweetness throughout. Enjoyed this, might have to take a rest before carrying on with my session; three beers in, an English, an Irish and now a German, sounds like the start of a good joke!
