Description
The first references to a brewery in the Weltenburg Monastery are to be found in the Weltenburg Nekrologium, in which it states that the master brewer died. Another scientifically recognized source is a recorded entry in the “Libellus Traditionum”, which is over 900 years old, and which dates from shortly before or after 1050.

In the barely millennium to the present day, monastic beer production in Weltenburg was only interrupted by the secularization from 1803 to 1846. In 1846 the brewery became monastery property again, and it has remained there to this day. The Weltenburg monastery brewery can therefore rightly be called the oldest monastery brewery in the world.

Hazy brown in colour with a deep malt aroma, with almost porto like qualities. Sweeter than other doppel tasted recently, nuttier, with more caramalized and more complex notes. Decent body but not what i remembered drinking Asam last fall.

Bottled (label says alc. 4.7%)
Small creamy off-white head. Dark ruby brown color. Crisp malty aroma. Taste is typical dunkel with roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Soft finish, slightly hoppy. Very well-balanced beer. I really had to look for more Weltenburger Kloster beers, because this seems to be quality brewery!

Sampled from tap at Kloster Weltenburg Buterscotch and raspberry aroma. Dark chestnut, low creamy white head. Fruity, nutty and roasted notes. Big malted caramel body with a fresh well-lagered fizzing mouthfeel. Nut and fruit aftertaste.

Bottle, 6.9% ABV
Dark reddish brown with small vanishing head - typical dunkel outfit. Aroma is quite complex with smoke, sweet caramel and malt but not alcoholic. In taste ABV is hidden very well: roasted smokey malt flavor and mild bitterness in finish. Very enjoyable beer.

Solid malt and broad hop aroma. Pale golden, big bubbles, good head. Bready malt base and subtle, hard to detect, hop flavors. Slightly fizzy mouthfeel. Well crafted, but not overly exiting Helles.

Rerate from bottle:
Mellow, not nearly as impressive as two decades ago, pleasant winter warmer.
old rating:
Grassy bitterhop notes with a bisquit background. Orange amber with a lowish creamy head. Nice broad hop flavors on top of a firm malt body. Hops are fresh and malt is fruity, I do not think this is a beer which ages or travels well. It is nice finally to taste a well-done german fall/winter seasonal.

Golden color. Some malt and grains aroma. A bit sweet body, thin malt, straw and grains, not enough hop; better balanced at the end, with some honey.

Straw malt nose, complemented by fine aromahops. Golden, small pearling bubbles low creamy head. Straw malt base, with some spices and rounded by hops. Fullbodied, slightly sticky mouthfeel, but a nice hopflower lingers a bit.
