Um 1271 braute man im Spital das Bier aus Gerste und Hafer, ging aber bereits im 14. Jahrhundert, zur Zeit Ludwigs des Bayern, zur alleinigen Verwendung von Gerste, Hopfen und Wasser über - so ist es aus den alten Schriften zu lesen.
Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beriet das Aufsichtsgremium des Katharinenspitals, der Spitalrat, die Verlegung und Erweiterung der Spitalbrauerei. Das Spital erwarb den Schambeck´schen Keller in Steinweg sowie später noch zusätzlich zur Verlagerung von Brauhaus und Wirtschaft das Strasser´schen Bräuhaus in Stadtamhof mit dem zugehörigen Sommerbierkeller in Steinweg - der heutigen Spitalgaststätte "Spitalkeller".
Die komplette Verlegung der Brauerei wurde schlussendlich nicht durchgeführt; stattdessen erfolgte auf dem heutigen Gelände ein zusätzlicher Neubau. Eine kleine, alte, sture Brauerei an der Donau...

Bottle at Spital, Regensburg, Germany sat outside in the Biergarten, it is glorious sunshine, sat with Dad and Pauline. Pours mid gold with a white head. Some sweetness initially but with a very nice hoppiness, it's got a good solid malt base.

Aus der ältesten Regensburger Brauerei (gegründet 1226). Relativ dunkel für ein hellen Weizen. Ordentliche Menge Hefe. Interessanter, süßlicher Geruch. Geschmacklich recht malzbetont. Etwas Frucht, etwas Getreide, mild gehopft. Minimale, interessante Sherrynote. Sehr spritzig. Weicher wäre hier aber besser und würde den Charakter dieses Bieres besser betonen..

Bottle. Clear amber color with foamy white head. Aroma is herbal hops, caramel, honey. Taste is herbal, caramel, honeymelon on the sweet side. Silky mouthfeel with low carbonation.

Bottle courtesy of Jonas, cheers Jonas! Consumed at home, Attenkirchen, with the Ratebeer Tasting Crew. Saturday 21st September 2019. Pours warm gold with a white head. If I drank this with my eyes closed then I would never have thought it was a Pale Ale. Malty, tastes stronger than expected, however there is a steady bitterness.

Bottle, hazy yellow amber with a huge very lacy head. Very mild almost-like-citrus aroma. Herbal on the tongue, caramel-apple tones, and tastes a lot heavier than a Pale Ale. Really nice but it reminds me more of the Strong Ale from Spital.

Hazy amber. Aroma is grain some apple and some lager. Taste is rough caramel with some juice. Cinnamon finish. Ok.

In bottle at the brewpub, after a 13 mile cycle ride along the Danube River from a campsite close to Bad Abbach. Saturday 3rd August 2019 the weather has perked up now hurrah. Very fruity and with a nice herbal and perfumey edge to it, good bitterness and really quite authentic.
