Description
After a great reception from his hobby as an enthusiastic amateur brewer, Toby Mackenzie and his wife Caroline decided to expand and go full time establishing the award winning Red Willow brewery in 2010. Their aim was to make the types of beer that they like - full of flavour yet easy to drink. Red Willow now offer a range of beers that can be found in many local pubs and shops in cask

330ml bottle, 7.4 % abv, picked up at the Trembling Madness Drinks Shop when we visited York last January. Soapy, white head with fine retention and lacing rings to the glass. The body is rather muddy, amber coloured. Bittersweet aromas of mid-sweet malts and leafy hops. Joint flavours of peach, orange and caramel malts. Semi-dry, bittersweet tail. Soft in the mouth. Decent IPA, medium bodied (shared with Finn 27.11.2013).

330ml bottle bought at the Trembling Madness Drinks shop in York. Shared with Finn back home. Rocky beige head, good amount of lacing. Dark brown body colour. Smell of dark malts, bone dry. Moderate roasted flavours of brown and black malts joined by anise and pine-like bitterness to the ending. Medium bodied. Drinking pleasure, full of soul (Tromsø 27.11.2013).

God duft av frisk citrus. Fin honningfarge. Mye kremet skum. Frisk og god litt syrlig smak av citrus med en god lang ettersmak.

Very dark brown colour. Aroma of smoked malt, cocoa, brown sugar. Flavours of smoke and burnt bitersweet malts. The fine but intense carbonation is the only downside.

Bottle, Chester Beer & Wine. Deep dark brown pour with a tan head. Pleasing nose of roasted malts, grapefruit , chocolate and hops. Sweet flavour with further roasted character and some decent hop bitterness. Decent balance struck. Very tidy Black IPA and a fitting reflection on British society today.

Keg at The Hanging Bat. Black body with a thin off-white head. Light lacing. Aroma of Ribena and chocolate. Not as intense or hoppy as I was expecting. Flavour of coffee, Mars Bar, plum and Twiglet dust. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Average carbonation. A very good Black IPA but lacking the complexity and intensity of the best I’ve tried (namely BrewDog’s Libertine and Buxton’s Black Rocks and Imperial Black).

50cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Says IPA on the bottle, but it’s more a golden ale to me. Hazy golden yellow colour, white head. Aroma of pale malts, flowers, pineapple, overripe fruits. Flavour is dry, malty, floral, fruity, malty bitter finish with a hint of citrus. Light-bodied, bordering on fizzy carbonation. Not great.
