Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.

Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

Sample at Kurtkeller 010: Inventory Reduction-tastic 01 on 04/12/2014. This brew is a clear orange-copper color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, grapefruit and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of floral hops, citrus and roast malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a lingering citrusy hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Growler shared by maniac at the April 2014 Charlottesville tasting. Pours a hazy amber color with a thin frothy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of strong yeast, floral and spicy hops, apples, a bit of a briny note. The taste is apples, strong phenolic spice, caramel, glue, citrus. Not good, not bad, just... weird.

750 mL Bottle (2014) poured into a Belgian snifter. Pours a dark brownish orange/caramel color with just a bit of off-white ring around the glass. Not much lacing, fades away fairly quickly. Aromas of coconut, bourbon, oak, caramel, vanilla, citrus. Tasting notes of bourbon, grapefruit citrus, oak, pine, caramel, candied fruit. Light hops on the backend. Medium body. Slightly juicy and syrupy mouthfeel with a dry, warm and slightly boozy finish. Low carbonation. Pretty enjoyable, fairly smooth for 13.3% ABV.

Bottle (2014) shared with Maryland friends, poured into a tasting glass. Pours black with brown hues and a tan head. Aromas of raspberries mostly, light chocolate, light roast. Tasting notes of mostly raspberries with light chocolate and light tart notes. Medium body with a mostly dry finish. Medium carbonation, light mouthfeel. Would like more chocolate in the taste and a fuller body but it’s a solid fruity stout.

I liked the 2014 version even more, updating the score: 4.0: 8/4/8/4/16

Location: 750 ml bottle from my Dad, 3/21/14, 2013 Release

Aroma: The nose is pumpkin spice, yeast, and some grain, and a little grass
Appearance: It pours a murky orange color with a small beige head and streaky lace
Flavor: The flavor is balanced between spice, sweetness, funk, and a little bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, it has a plus carbonation, some spice, and a clean, dry finish
Overall Impression: This mix works pretty interestingly. This isn't an amazing beer, but it was a nice one to try, something I enjoyed, and something I could see trying again.
