Grey Trees Brewery
Microbrewery
in Aberdare,
Rhondda Cynon Taff,
Wales 🏴
Associated Venue: National Tap
Established in 2011
The name, Grey Trees, comes from the English translation of the village where the brewery was born, Llwydcoed. After a successful first few years, we moved the brewery to a larger premises, breathing new life into an old industrial unit in Aberaman, Aberdare. Although our location changed, everything involved in making the very best crafted ales stayed the same, even the local fresh Welsh water source.

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours a golden brown with a small white head. Nose is a mix of malts and citrus with some nuts thrown in for good measure. Taste is sweet malts and caramel but with hints of both peppers and corn. Finish is sweet but with some underlying bitterness. Quite nice but not a wolrdbeater.

500ml bottle conditioned: BB 1st Aug 2021. Drank at home on 13th Oct 2020. Clean and clear amber body, until I allowed the sediment from the base of the bottle to escape, murky dull amber body thereafter, off-white head. Malty molasses in the nose, stone fruits also. Not getting too much tropical fruity notes considering the hops listed, more piney as the beer warms in the glass. Bitter and dry finish, it's a fine Pale Ale, even if the hops are all American.

Cask @ Hop In Beer and Gin House, Brecon. Pours clear amber, no real head to speak of. Aroma is herbal, nettley. Taste is fruity, leafy, bitter, herbal, nutty malts.. thin watery body.. borderline whether it's on the turn, or just not very good. I'm leaning towards the latter.

Keg @ Grey Trees National Tap, Aberdare. Clear gold appearance, well-appointed white head. After being told the Grey Trees Valley Cider was a re-badged cider from a large cider producer, I kind of expected this Valley Pilsner to be a re-badged pils. Didn't ask, though I wish I had. It tastes clean, crisp with an appealing sweetness. Very well presented. Hard to really form a solid opinion with the lingering doubt this is made elsewhere. Scored objectively.

Cask @ Grey Tree's National Tap, Aberdare after a day of throwing myself down a hillside at Bike Park Wales. Clear golden copper appearance, white collar atop. Gently sweet malt nose. Taste presents a medium-bodied, lightly sweet bitter. Oily caramel, floral hints, sweet malt, relatively light bodied. Fine.
