Description
Labatt has deep roots in Canada stemming from its founder John Kinder. In 1847, a little more than a decade after arriving in London, Ontario from Ireland, John Kinder Labatt purchased London's Simcoe Street brewery in partnership with Samuel Eccles and by 1855 had become the brewery's sole proprietor. The brewery was later renamed John Labatt's Brewery, marking the beginning of one of Canada's largest and most successful companies.

In 1995, it was purchased by Belgian brewer Interbrew. Labatt is now part of the new company, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev).

Originally rated July 2007. Second brew tonight of the St-Urbain series. Pours a clean bronze colour with little to no carbonation. Off-white head that is foamy and does not stay as long as their blonde. A bit of lacing sticks to the glass. The aromas are pretty much the same as the blonde, and so is the mouthfeel. Again, that not-so-good metallic taste appears in the taste. The malt is different in this one, obviously, to make this a red lager. Meant to be dranked in the bottle though. I think I prefer the blonde.

A damn sight better than Guinness Draught, Extra Stout was the beer I forced myself to like when I first started venturing outside of BMC. (The very first time I drank Extra Stout I was tripping on acid and kept getting confused why my beverage didn’t taste like root beer until I convinced myself it did.) There’s a nice, smoky richness to this beer, but it never develops past the initial imprint, leaving a bland, bitter finish to leave you frustrated. I’m sure this bottle is getting a couple points out of nostalgia, but, hey, I’m only human. Or a reasonable facsimile of. (08/08)

Originally rated May 2008. Third one in the St-Urbain line that Labatt’s brews. Pours a light golden-amber colour with a decent frothy white head that has average retention. Mild carbonation and not much lacing. Nice fresh malt scent at first, to then, be invaded by a unpleasant metallic aroma. Watery mouthfeel found in boring swills. The flavour is pretty bland. I don’t even find it sweet, so I cannot find the honey in here. Notes of corn and that metallic offering. Not bad when dranked from the bottle, but other than that... whatever.

Also known here is Quebec as Labatt Bleue Pilsener Désalcoolisée. Both a 6-pack of this for a party and it was actually not bad from the can. Now the real test, poured in a glass. Decent foamy white head that has good retention and lots of lacing. The beer itself is pale golden with lots of big bubbles stuck to the glass. Very mild malt nose with notes of chemical hops. Same of the taste... a little grainy with hints of honey, but overall, quite mild. So, a decent no-alcohol brew for those times when you want to drink all night and drive home whenever.

This stout poured a deep black colour with a big, tan, creamy head. T the nose there are scents of chocolate, caramel, smoke, roasty malts and a little hay. First swig was alot more carbonated than I was expecting. Not quite as smooth as the regular Guinness stout but packs a huge flavour punch non the less. Flavours of roasted malt, smoke, caramel and molassass are most prodominant with slight flavours of coffee and cereal come in after. Finish is burnt with smoke flavour lingering.

Canette 710ml.

Labatt Wildcat! Yeah!! It comes in a 950ml can (about half a gallon I think) and I swear it looked smaller in the store... everything’s bigger in Canada! I think you could build a few airplane parts just out of one can alone. It must be noted that the can is not designed to be poured from - it was dribbling all over the place as I poured it into my Cantillon chalice, and now there’s beer on the table and it stinks like old socks mixed with rubbing alcohol. Which brings us to the aroma - It’s old socks, rubbing alcohol, and cheap rice wine snatched from the Chinese supermarket. It has a sickly yellow colour with foamy head, again with that head that no one will ever see. The flavour is pretty much nothing. A lot like water with a bad aftertaste - that aftertaste being corn and cardboard. Thus, it sucks, and that’s no surprise; but I"m still baffled as to how these things are sold, aside from masochists like me. I’d normally just go get a mickey of vodka, much more efficient than downing a litre of bad beer.
