Description
The "Grain d'orge" brewery is a family brewery that was founded in 2002 by Benoît and Viviane Johnen. It is located in the village of Hombourg, at the limit of the 3 borders. The production of the brewery has increased year by year since its creation to reach in 2016, 4000Hl of beers.
Its main beers are Brice, Joup, Canaille, Grelotte, The Pom, Triple, Double and Pure d'Aubel. To this are added others, so-called beers on contract. They are tailor-made for small debits or special events.
The combination of ingredients and natural spices makes Grain d'orge beers unique and the layout of a spacious brewing room respecting the standards imposed by the FASFC guarantees their quality. In addition, a banquet hall has been fitted upstairs. This is available for rent but also serves to welcome groups who visit the brewery in order to end pleasantly with a tasting.

Bottle, 6.5%. Slow gusher. Yeasty, slightly sweet aroma. Cloudy dark brown colour, small floaties. Small head. The flavour is also yeasty, with a little aromatic hops. A little cookie spices in the finish. The alcohol is slightly noticeable in the flavour along with a little sugary sweetness and maltiness. Rather thin mouthfeel.

11.12oz bottle, Grain d’orge version, best before Jul-Aug 2006, drunk on 2/26/07
Deep caramel-amber body has a strong maroon tint to it and a dark beige head that is initially very large (the bottle also exploded when I opened it), though it recedes to cover. But the retention is strong from there, and there is moderate lacing in patches. Couldnt really leave the sediment behind, since the bottle blew up, but the liquid was still clear, but had particles in suspension. However, they dropped to the bottom of the glass pretty quickly, and there was still plenty of sediment on the bottom of the bottle.
Figgy-prune-like aroma, with medium-dry toffee and very chewy, adjunct sugar notes (must be the pear syrup). Lots of caramel stickiness as well, with a profound nuttiness and strangely, some dry, acidic notes on the very end. The aroma, unlike the flavor, seems to be mostly free of alcohol apparency, but there is still a bit of sharpness on the finish. Medium strength of aroma, the fig/raisin/toffee notes being the most interesting, though I would hardly say it’s that complex or unique.
Surprisingly as well, the beer wasnt infected despite still gushing violently. Instead, more sherry, caramel, fig and prune notes are at the front of the flavor, with strong residual sugar comfort. Some light "pear" notes emerge, though I dont think I would call it that, had I drunk this blindly. More just a vague fruity syrupiness. Despite all of the sweet notes, the texture is still a bit thin/loose at times, with the carbonation not being overly tight for a bottle-conditioned beer. Some slickness, some syrupiness and some wateriness all show up at different times. My biggest issue with the flavor, however, was a very strong raw alcohol flavor that strips the malt sweetness from the finish, leaving dry, burning, alcohol and light phenols as well. It seemed to actually lighten with breathing, but never fully passed. Very strange beer. I enjoyed the malts at the start, but the beer dosent really go anywhere from there. Tighter carbonation and less adjunct fermentation would strengthen the body/texture and reduce the fusel alcohols. Even after all of that, I still strangely enjoyed it.

Brown-creamy tinted medium head, variously bubbled; brown-chestnut coloured beer. Bit creamy nose, (cheap) hazelnut-chocolatepaste, going over in rather leafy, earthy and green shrublike dark malts. Rather dull cardboard taste, but enlivened by some leafy and herbal flavours, pinch of chocolate, and a spring water feel - also marked in the MF. Sweet-ish, (very) little bitterness, just a bit wry. A bit (spring)watery texture, ending rather empty. Mmmyeah... Difficult to say what’s bad, if anything. Rather all in the neutral-negative: not lively, not bitter, not delicate, not uplifting...
